Hi guys.
This is my first post so I hope I posted it in the right forum.
Ok so i bought a new internal hard drive for my ps3 of 1TB because my old one has reached the full capacity (120GB) and it got very annoying had to delete saves and games just to play a new one and such. I even had to delete my Oblivion data because it was like 8GB ![]()
anyway here is my question: I formatted the new hard drive through my computer in FAT32 so the ps3 should detect it and all the data could be imported with no problems. Is it possible to just transfer the data completely from the old internal hard drive to my new one without having to back up (i don't have an external hard drive that has more than 120GB and trying to avoid buying a new one just for this purpose).
I have a SATA to USB with a power supply, if i back up my old one hard drive into the new hard drive, is the data available to be used right away or is it just an image that HAS to be retrieved by data transfer utility?
I hope i was very clear but if not, please ask me more info and i'll get back to you guys right away.
Thank youuuu
Giona

Welcome to Playstation.com
Unfortunately what you're attempting will not work. The Playstation 3 will ask to reformat any new drive that is installed into it. This is to prevent what you're trying to do. Once you insert the drive, it will give you the format prompt, and once you start it will wipe out any information already on it. The Playstation 3 will only read an external drive that's formatted to FAT32.
In order to fully restore your existing data to your current console is to first perform an external back up using the Backup Utility to an external drive formatted to FAT32, install the new drive, format it, and then perform restore operation.
The only way I know of to get around having to back up your data is to subscribe to the Playstation Plus service, and then utitlize the cloud storage feature. Then you can restore your data onto your new drive. There is a limit to your storage capacity, so you will need to check the Playstation Plus guidelines.
Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for the heads up.
I really wanted to avoid the back up part because i don't have an external hard drive big enough to storage 100GB off my ps3. But i understand where you're coming from. I will have to find one and do the normal process then.
