I have a 60GB PS3 and I have about 2gigs left. I want to upgrade to a 500GB and not anything higher than that because I have heard that the PS3 will only use 500gigs even if there is a 1TB HD in it. I want to buy the 500GB HD soon and I wanted to know how to successfully install it. I was wondering that I would probably be able to buy the HD with a separate USB adapter and a HD enclosure for the old HD, connect it to the PS3, backup all of my data from the PS3 to the 500gig HD, take the 60gig out and put the 500gig in, then just use the 60gig as an external HD for my PC. Would this work?
OH, and does the PS3 actually read bigger HD's now? Most of the forums on the net are pretty old on this issue.
Your feedback is very much appreciated.
Thanks, in advanced
first of all. putting a 1tb will not give u 500 gb. You will have close to 900 gb if u got a 1 tb hard drive.( currently 1tb and up arent supported by ps3 b/c of height restrictions)
second of all ps3 hard drive bays dont support one tb b/c the hard drive wont fit in the ps3 unless u mod the ps3. the highest amount of gbs that can fit in a ps3 in 750 gb.
thats what i exactly did. i bought a 500 gb hard drive. and i had a spare computer hard drive and i bought a external hard drive enclosure from micro center wiht it own ac adapter. backed it up and installed the 500 gb
first of all. the EXTERNAL HARBE FORMATTED to FAt32 in order to be found on the ps3.
after u switch hard drives. 60 gb must be formatted again using windows( i dont know about this) just connecting the 60 gb to the computer wont get the hard drive recongnized wuich means the ps3 hard drives CANT be found on the ps3 b/c sony has a encyrption on the hard drive.
No, your plan won't work as-is. The backups you make with Backup Utility aren't playable until you restore them to a drive. You need something to hold your backup data to restore onto the new 500 GB drive.
You should also avoid the Advanced Format 4KB sector drives for now. I'm not sure if the PS3 supports them 100%.
The PS3 only formats drives for internal use. Internal drives and external drives store different kinds of data on the PS3 and aren't interchangeable. You need a PC and a utility like HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to format the external drive as FAT32.
No you cant. The PS3 HDD is only readable by that PS3. If possible you can borrow a PS3 and put the new HDD in it, then transfer all the data over. When you place a new HDD in a PS3 it will format it before you can do anything else.
