Re: The PlayStation 4 gives up 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

Jul 26, 2013

I see the scenario's.

1) This is all BS

2) This is true and originally Sony was going to implement the same or similar policies and attachments (camera) as MS.

The additional OS requirements were built in for the camera use. As well as the TV servicing. But to put the boot in MS arse at E3

they quickly adjusted and pulled the idea as well as came in $100 less. This is still a win for Sony IMO. The PS4 is not

reliant on the camera like xb1.

3) This is a plant article by Sony to get everyone saying see the PS4 has the same power as the xb1 now. Wait a few days

and say no it's still the same as it was power wise before this story. Then all the xbots will not have any choice but to admit

finally the PS4 is the most powerful system.

Totally wrong information in your link. Dev units only reserve 1GB for the OS, and there is 7GB unified for the games. Anyone with a dev unit knows this is correct.

This is a report from a source that has a source. Not saying that the OS footprint isn't going to be 3.5GB but until Sony releases a statement this is far from fact.

My thing is this. If there are only around 5 Gigs of ram available for games, why would sony take the risk of sending out dev kits that had a available 7 gigs? Something just smells fishy here....

That report is just re-stating the report from the OP (the source for that is the english version of the OP's link)

Re: The PlayStation 4 gives up 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

couldn't have said it better myself:

"Our Take:
Those supposed advantages that the PS4 was set to enjoy over the Xbox One sure seem to be dropping like flies, don’t they? I’m no fan of the unbearable wait to bring up the Xbox Guide or the somewhat more manageable delay in calling up the PS3 XMB, but reducing your system’s available memory by 43 percent is a high price to pay. RAM is the most important resource for many new modes of gameplay and other innovations that developers are looking to create on next-gen consoles. I’m all for my friends list instantly popping up on screen when called for, but do I want that at the cost of another 20 AI-driven characters active in the world? That’s a much harder question.

4.5GB of GDDR5 is still a huge bonanza of high-speed memory for developers to work with in 2013, but will we still be saying that in five years when Nvidia is rolling out unified CPU/GPU architecture with 16GB of similarly fast RAM for $200 tablets? As sexy as the PS4/XB1 tech specs are today, remember that they’re broadly similar to mid/high-end PCs available right now and that technology gets faster and cheaper every day. Ten years is a long time to lock in a hardware spec for, and I question the wisdom of both Sony and Microsoft cutting their systems off at the knees like this."

You are still basing your comments on rumor. This is information from a source of a source and there is no fact or statement from Sony.

so what? if it's a rumor, you don't think it's plausable to discuss? rather than just saying "NO NO NO" like a broken record?  What's the point of posting on this forum for discussions when people choose the denial train?  or if that is not the case, give a reason for saying no.

I'd rather discuss proven facts, since if a rumor turns out to be false, you just wasted your time.
