Agreed, but I would actually pay a bit extra for a brand new PS3 with true hardware backwards compatability for PS2 games.  I'd seriously pay $100 more, if needed.

At this point, having PS2 BC wouldn't make much difference to most PS3 consumers. Consumers and stores have largely moved on. Sony is still addressing this market by making HD remakes of the most popular PS2 titles and PS2 Classics on PSN for the more obscure ones...
