The problem is if you handcuff yourself to a character and it becomes instantly identifiable with your product, if that character falls out of favor with consumers, you're sunk. Nintendo was trying to make Mario cool back during the GameCube days. They pictured him with Radiohead in magazines, and had a GameCube set on The Man Show. It didn't work. So you're better off not having a designated mascot.
