Sony keeps firing developers

[ Edited ]

Another week, another story of developers being laid off

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-layoffs-hit-driveclub-killzone-and-the-playroom-developers/110...

Extracted from source: "Sony has laid off an undisclosed amount of staff at three of its UK developers: Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge, and SCE London Studio. VideoGamer reported that "numerous" people from each studio have been let go. In a statement, Sony said that a recent internal review triggered the need for restructuring at the studios."

Isn't Sony doing well with the PS4? Aren't they winning the next-gen war?

Sony should be getting a lot of money back from the manditory ps+ requirement, theres no reason they should be doing this now, wheres all the money going from 1m+ subscribers?

You have your answer right in your OP.

".... In a statement, Sony said that a recent internal review triggered the need for restructuring at the studios."

Oh, he can "read". It's just that he wants it to mean something entirely different than what it actually says.

Right Sony need to put a statement out and tell us what the **bleep** is going on.

Key people are leaving and they can't keep making us think it's the "Oh well everyone leaves at one point" excuse.

Amy Henning
Brian Karis
Jaime Griesemer
Seth Killian
Stig Asmussen
Jack Trenton

Other lay offs at Sony Santa Monica/Superbot

Then we have Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London

Now Col Rodgers

This really can't be ignored, they need to make a statment on this. Who else am I missing....anyone?

KZ was not the hit everyone expected it to be

Driveclub has had multiple problems already

Playroom... probably doesn't require too many developers on staff to begin with

I would agree with Sony that there was some 'restructuring' needed

Yes they are doing well and yes they are winning but the war is far from over...

Keep in mind if you want a better experience then some lesser skilled people need to be laid off to bring in new employees with new ideas...

So people aren't allowed to change jobs? A lot of these people have contracts and when they expire, they look for other work. As far as layoffs at studios, restructuring happens a lot in business. Internal rewviews happen every few years, and tney determine who stays and who goes. It's not that unusual.

Exactly, at my buisness they usually move managers around every so often after they anaylize how things are going from store to store, and if they think another manager might fit in better at another store they will move him there. Do people think people spend their entire careers in one place? I heard somewhere that the average time at a job is like 5-10 years on average or something.

Whoa now. There is no "big picture" or conspiracy here. Some of the people you mentioned were not let go from Sony, they were let go from their developers or they left. I don't think Sony themselves have any say so in who Naughty Dog, Bungie, or Epic hire / fire................

It is not for Sony (especially if they do not directly OWN that company) or their former developer to say why they left, if there is a specific reason at all. More than likely it has to do with creative differences / money. So, people take their ball and try to find a place that appreciates them more / will pay them more money. OR, it could even be health issues. We don't know, nor do we need to know.
