Solid State Drive (SSD) in PS3 Super Slim

25 replies 6978 views Edited Nov 21, 2012

Tomorrow I will be getting my ps3 super slim (12 gb). I am planning to upgrade it with 120 gb SSD. Can anyone suggest which SSD should I buy?

I basically used my old ps3 slim for games. But its HDMI recently died and I sold it. I m kinda retro gamer in thoughts. So I dont get digital copy of games. I like to have them in disk version. So my ps3 is only used for gaming. I dont use it as media hub.

I m technically noob so I have little idea in this matter. But I have heard that SSD (sata 3/2) cant be recognized by ps3. is it true? Any suggestions are most welcome.

PS: Yeah, I know ps3 wont utilize SDD at max and it very expensive than normal HDD. But I have decided to get SSD. Please dont put that topic in this post. Thank you.

Doesn't matter the SATA interface. The good thing about SATA is that it is backwards-compatible with itself.

ANY SATA 2 or 3 SSD can be recognized by the PS3's SATA 1 interface.

You COULD get a SATA 1/1.5 SSD, but good luck finding them, if you can find them they're almost dirt cheap but they are nowhere near as reliable as a newer drive

Make sure that you update the firmware of the SSD before putting it in the PS3.... otherwise the performance of the SSD will quickly degrade.

Depending on the manufacturer you go with, they each have their own way for a FW update. You'll need to search " (manufacturer) SSD firmware update) " and that'll get you over the most diffucult hump.

Because I'm  felling nice today..... I found one for you to consider

Thanks a lot. I usually upgrade my ps3's firmware ia usb coz my internet have a tendency to get disconnected. So I will upgrade firmware of ps3 before plugging the SSD.
And by "firmware" did u mean ps3's firmware or SSD have their own formware?

Firmware of the SSD.

You WILL need to have the current PS3 firmware anyway as the OS exists partially on the PS3 mobo itself, and on the hdd

well you COULD do that..... but the performance of an SSD will degrade overtime since there have been a lot of software changes to the controller boards of SSD's

You wont earn nothing by upgrading to SSD, maybe slightly faster installation times. Sata limit is 150MB/s so buy a high end HDD. Its the same thing as for PS3.
