Questions about PS3?

9 replies 156 views Edited Sep 19, 2012
Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum.

I don't know anything about the PS3, I only know is what I hear. I hear it's not only for games, but it could be for watching movies such as movies in MKV? Am I reading/hearing right? The honest truth is I'm not really a game person, but would it be worth it to buy a PS3 for what I would like to use it? I really would like to buy one, but I could only buy it from the store in person, and not online. If I did buy one from the store, what exactly would I be asking for too buy like what brand, what GB size, and etc?

I also found this tutorial in Google from someone wrote it on this forum (http://www.manolution.com/2011/06/the-complete-guide-to-playing-video-on-your-ps3/). It's how to setup a PS3 for a Media Server in order to play all kinds of MKV, H.264 formats where MKV is the container. I was reading some of it, but one of the things it requires is a USB stick. Unfortunately, I don't have a USB stick. I do have two USB external hard drives that requires electricity, and you plug it via USB. If I get a PS3, could I follow that guide exactly the same way, but substitute the USB stick with the USB hard drive?

Thank you if someone could reply back with info!

I appricate it very much!

A new model of PS3 that will likely be announced soon is supposed to cost less than the current models. It plays PS1, PS2 (only digital copies), and PS3 games, Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs. You can store music, video, and pictures on it. It has a decent selection of apps including Netflix, YouTube, and MLB.TV just to name a few. You can also browse the internet on it although the browser is subpar. It's definitely worth it even if you don't play games on it very often.

Thank you for that info! That sounds great!

1.) When is it being released?

2.) I know you said it will cost less, but how much will it cost? Or there's no price yet?

3.) Are you able to answer my questions with the link I posted in my second part of my thread where I gave the link?

Thank you again!

All PlayStation 3 models can do the things that I said. As we speak Sony is having a press conference that they decided to make impossible for people to view. It is rumored that the new PS3 model will be officially announced at this press conference so obviously I don't know anything concrete about it. We should know within a couple hours. Stay tuned. I'll check out your link and get back to you or someone might answer you before I do.

You're link doesn't seem to work. I think what you're asking is can you extract video from an external hard drive using the USB ports. If that's what you're asking I am 99.9% sure the answer is yes. I've never tried it (only used USB sticks) but that should work. Anyone with basic computer knowledge should be able to do this. If you have trouble with it then call the PlayStation technical support number, 1-800-345-7669.

Sorry, you can not. The drives are encrypted so that you can't swap them out willy nilly, and access anyone's data. If you were to take the old drive out and put it into another PS3, the console would ask you to format the drive, and in effect wipe out all the data on the drive.
