Ps3 Time Limiter

Is there a way for me to put a time limit on my cousin so he can only play for up to 2 hours and the system will auto shut down, because i dont want him to play it for a long time. All the other questions people just say ur the parent enforce the time limit, but im not xD. i'm just a cousin and he is bigger then me so i cant really enforce any time limit on to him.If there is tell me, that would help alot! Thank You!

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

It's up to his parents. But why not say to him "hey man, let's do something else for a while"?

The Captain, as usual is pretty spot on, but on that note; while the PlayStation3 console does not have a "sleep" timer per say you can use the "power save" option in much the same way. If you set it up to turn off even while in special operations such as on the net, playing music or gaming it works in much the same way as a sleep timer. Otherwise you can always do --

  • A.) Use the television sets own sleep timer.
  • B.) Be the adult and suggest doing something more proactive.

Just a bit of advice.

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

I think that would be a awsome idea. My kids are sneaky and they find  ways to sneak back on the PS3 after they get kicked off, it would make things alot easier. It's hard for some of us who work long hours to control the time spent on the ps3. Xbox has this feature it would be nice if playstation can do something like it. I also suggested to my kids to try something else like playing outside, ball hockey, swimming, soccer, baseball, basketball, playing with friends but still no luck. I guess it just easier to sit on the couch with a paddle in their hands

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

The XBox has this feature because it has been in Windows NT from the start, but it was developed there for reasons that don't apply to game consoles.  Windows NT wasn't originally even intended for home use.  The PS3 isn't just a game console.  It is intended to be a Blu-ray player, video and music streaming set-top box, photo slide show player, etc.  It isn't designed to be a toy for children, so it doesn't have controls for how long it can be used.  It is intended to be used throughout the day, by different family members.  There are other problems with this idea as well.  PS3 Users don't have passwords, so there is no way for the PS3 to actually know who is playing.  How would you limit kids' playing time without limiting adults' use of the PS3? Parents could change the settings manually if they have the PS3 System password, but that would be inconvenient, and they would probably forget to set them back a lot of the time. Not a workable design.

The family PS3 is intended to be in the living room or family room where its use can be easily supervised by active parents.  If you don't supervise your kids when they are at home, then you might want to consider the fact that there are much worse things they could be doing than playing video games for a few extra hours. If that is the risk that you are focusing on, then I suspect that you have much bigger parenting challenges ahead than excessive video game console use.  Maybe they are better off in front of the PS3.

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

You don' t need to explain the features the PS3 has cause I'm the one who paid for it( you know the working parent). I think people are misunderstanding why parents are wanting this feature is not for a babysitter but a TOOL to help moniter their time on the PS3. I have their computer and internet shut off on them after a certain amount of time and it works great. Kids today don't want to work, Don't want to help out around the house  all they want to do is use the computer internet, game consoles, ipod and celluar phones . Not saying anything bad here but the easiest way of saying it is kids today are border line lazy cause of these electronics. Even if we remove them from the computer or PS3 they still find a way back on them wether they sneak off to their friends to play them or they sneak on them when you're not looking. Don't preach to me about bigger parenting challenges I grew up on a farm where the only way is work and respect for other, I would love to see a child today follow me when i was their age. I heard the graphic language of other players while playing games on the PSN, so as far as giving them few extra hours on the ps3 , I dont think so there alot of things to be done around the house that would only take a few extra hours. Judging from your 2700 post on this network I think somebody should be monitoring your time on the internet or PS3

It's a bit primitive, but you could always use one of these;

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

The PS3 will never have time limits on it.

Why?  The clock is not battery backed-up. Turn off the switch on the back and the PS3 forgets the time and date.

Another dumb cost-cutting measure that's biting Sony in the **bleep**.

If they were smart, they'd add battery backup, decent time controls, IR remote support and USB power control to the newest super slim PS3.

I'm also available for birthday parties and Bar Mitzvahs.

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

Or how about you sack up and be responsible by setting limits yourself?

Is this the way people are "responsible" in the 21st cenutry? By saying "I'm being responsible by letting Sony set limits on how long my child can play video games".

You can say "'C'MON SONY!!" all you want, but in the end the responsibility lyes with you.

Re: Ps3 Time Limiter

I agree with you about the kids sneaking around once you kick them off. I don't think there will ever be a time limiter but it would be nice to see how long they have spent doing certain things like you can on the WII. It tells you how long and how many times each game and channel was used. I have the same problem with my son, i used to turn the power off to the outlets in the room and he learned how to turn them back on so now I make him bring me his games and I keep them hidden and when it is time to play I give him the game he wants and he brings it back when he wants to switch or when his time is up. It is definitely hard no matter what kind of parent you are because you definitely can't be up thier butts every second.
