Playstation 4 general information thread

15 replies 250 views Edited Jun 4, 2013

Here's everything known about the Playstation 4:

Computer Technology Employed

Main CPU:

AMD Jaguar-based, which is based on the Bobcat Brazos microarchitecture, with minor modifications

Out-of-order load-store unit

8 cores, 1.6 ghz, 128-256 Kbytes of L2 cache or so per each

200 million transistors or so (Cell on PS3 has 232 milion, XCPU has about 160 million)

2 128-bit SIMD units per core, 2 instruction pipelines, 2-way super-scalar design

They evidently went for a low-power, low-transistor design to make sure the box is small and doesn't emit heat.  It's about equivalent to a PowerPC 970 in performance for most applications as shown in performance benchmarks of the Brazos Bobcat core.  So it's like having 8 XCPU cores from the Xbox 360.  In useable performance.

Graphics Processing Unit:

ATi GPU, with the run of the mill ATi GPU features

18 Computer units capable of 1.84 TFLOPS

32 MB 1T-SRAM cache running at 76 Gbytes/second

Approximately 600 mhz per second

1152 Stream Processors (288 128-bit SIMD multiply-adders)

800 mhz GPU clock speed

2 billion transistors or so, with 1T-SRAM

Main memory:

8 GB GDDR5 unified memory

176 GB/s

Hard Drive:

1 TB hard drive

A typical massive GPU.  1T-SRAM to speed up some memory accesses.

What else is known about Playstation 4?  50 European developers at work on it.  Launches in November 2013.  No DRM or control of used games.  Going to be the biggest launch yet.  Far larger then Playstation 3 - massive popularity.  Gran Turismo 6 is not being aimed at the console.  Over a dozen games shown.  $400 launch price.

At the moment the release date and the price is not public knowledge. Purely speculation. So you should edit it out of the end of the post.

I wish I could believe that.

Source for 1TB HDD? First I've heard of a specified size...

Multiple things wrong with the specs listed. The 'Brazos' platform used for performance comparison is last generation. The Jaguar cores are based on 'Kabini'.

The GPU part doesn't not have 32MB of SRAM. Thats the Xbox One's chip that has it.

Pretty sure the GPU is also integrated on the same die as the CPU.  Meaning the Jaguar is actually an APU.

ATI no longer exists as an independent corporation.  They merged with AMD a couple of years ago.  This is why the Radeon series is now AMD.

That is A LOT of misleading information.....

Where is your source?

Launches in November 2013 - Not true, yet, so don't make things up if you don't know anymore than anyone else does. Sony hasn't even said anything.
No DRM or control of used games. - More Speculation.
Going to be the biggest launch yet, Far larger then Playstation 3 - massive popularity. - Thats what they always say.... said so when the PS2 launched, and when the PS3 launched... No one cares how "big" the launch is, they just want to play games
Gran Turismo 6 is not being aimed at the console. - more speculation. No one knows.
Over a dozen games shown. - A dozen games shown? where? I only recall MAYBE 6 games shown, and one of them wasn't a "working title" that wasn't even officially announced.
$400 launch price. - You wish. More speculation

If you're going to speculate.... at least provide your source. Otherwise, no one cares. Because we already know the PS4's tech specs as it is.... so tell us something we DON'T know, that can be verified as fact.

Exactly.... there is no SRAM in the PS4, as its not needed since the PS4's memory bandwidth is at 180GB/s (or Gigabit?)

The Xbox NEEDS that 32MB of eSRAM because the throughput of the DDR3 is not fast enough and the eSRAM is fast, but also expensive, so the SRAM is needed to artificially speed up the memory throughput.

The guy is obviously talking out of his butt, by taking speculation to a whole new level.

There is actually rumors that they overclocked the cpu to 2ghz. If that's true then the APU will be 8 cores at 2ghz. thats impresive for a console. Kinda worried that 1.6 wouldn't be enough.

Very doubtful. 2Ghz is the top rated speed for Jaguar and the TDP goes up allot if its pushed to the max. To much power needed and heat produced. the 1.6ghz is most likely.

Ghz speed isn't the be all end all to determine performance.
