PlayStation 4 Eye and the PS3?

8 replies 132 views Edited Jun 14, 2013

Hello all.

I am wondering, will the new PlayStation 4 Eye will work with the PS3?

I ask because the PS3 Eye really has a bad picture quality and I was hoping that the PS3 would some day get an updated version of it. With the new PS4 Eye coming out I am hoping that I can use it on my PS3 as well.

So does anyone know if it will be able to work with the PS3 as well?

I'd say the answer to that is no. You can't expect accessories for a new console to work on a older system.

If the new PSEye is based on USB 3.0, it would have to downgrade picture quality or compress it heavily so you can cram it into the much, much slower USB 2.0.

Actually if the camera is a usb 3.0 it would not really downgrade the Picture Quality of the camera. The Resolution would be the same. It would just  run at a slower FPS. Basically it would just not be as smooth of a video but the quality of the image resolution would be the same. Unless you consider the smoothness of the video to as Picture Quality. I know some people do for some odd reason. But that is really Video Quality not Picture Quality. Smiley Happy

For example: If you had a usb 3.0 camera like say the Flea3 from Point Grey, it would not output the image (1280x960) at 120FPS when using a usb 2.0 like it would when using a usb 3.0 port. It would still be (1280x960) just with a lower FPS.

In short all usb 3.0 devices will work with usb 2.0 ports as they are backwards compatible. They will just not take advantage of the improvements of usb 3.0 such as transfer speed, increased bandwidth, and power management.

In respect to the PlayStation 4 Eye I am wondering if the programed software for it will work with the PS3 games if it was plugged into the PS3. It has two cameras in it after after all. It would be nice if they programmed it to also work on the PS3. Connecting it to the PS3 with its usb 2.0 ports would not be an issue.

I did read that they said the PS4 Eye will work with the Move Controllers as well as the new Dual Shock 4. But I am wondering if that is just when those controllers are used with the PS4. I am hoping that since it will work with the regular PS Move Controllers that it will work with the PS3.

Could we get a Mod or Dev to answer on this? Or does someone know where an answer to this is already offically mentioned?

I would really like to know an offical answer to it.

I believe the PS4 Eye uses a proprietary auxillary port that's on the back of the PS4.

The eye uses the AUX port. PS3 does not have that port.

Well if that is the case then that would answer my question.

Would kind of suck if they changed the design of its USB plug for the PS4 Eye so that it would not fit into a regualr USB port.

I think some of the reason behind it, is proprietary. People have been hacking the eye and eyetoy for years and using them as webcams on PC`s. Sony probably wants to put a stop to that.
