Play music while playing games, ONLY with Music Unlimited?

37 replies 416 views Edited Oct 25, 2013

Kind of shady, Sony, that is a trick not even Microsoft did.

Anyone know if you can just play mp3's off your hard drive?

This was a change from version 1.00. What they don't say is if 1.00 allowed music from the Hard Drive or other cloud to be played while gaming.

Many of us already have Music Unlimited. This is a welcome and nice feature. I don't really see this a trick, but rather an added feature for those of us that are already using Music Unlimted. I use this service in my car, on my phone, when I travel and of course on the PS3. It will be nice to be able to listen to my playlist while playing some games but for other games I think I would prefer the in game sound track.

Actually...

From: http://blogs.seattletimes.com/brierdudley/2013/09/09/microsoft-expands-music-service-but-limits-xbox...

"Last week the company confirmed that the [Xbox One] won’t come with the “media extender” feature that enabled people to use the console to stream music, photos and video from a PC.

So far we mostly have details how the Xbox One handles music. It turns out that it will not be able to play music you own and have stored on a PC or home network, at least not directly and without a fee.

“For now it’s a $10 subscription per month on the console to get access to that,” Porter (left) said, adding that more options may come after the Xbox One is launched.

In other words, if you want to play your music collection through the console’s default music app, you’ll have to subscribe to the premium version of the app, which costs $10 per month or $100 for a yearly subscription.

Then you can upload your music collection to Microsoft’s cloud storage service, and stream it back to the console via the Internet.

That’s in addition to the $60 per year that you must pay for premium Xbox Live Gold membership to use the music app in the first place.

Nice try Sony

even more technical solution for the PS4

Will need a couple things.

1. Computer or laptop capable of line input

2. Digital Audio Converter

3. TOSLink cable (a.k.a. Optical audio cable)

4. RCA to 3.5mm cable

5. PC speakers or headphones

This works for PS2/PS3/PS4

Step 1: take the TOSLink cable and plug it into both the PS4 and the DAC (Digital Audio Converter)

Step 2: plug in the RCA to 3.5mm cable with the RCA jacks in the DAC and the 3.5mm in the Line in on the laptop or PC

Step 3: plug in headphones and enjoy using skype music what ever else you want with game sound

That is shady, also, CK. I didn't know that, so thanks for the input.

I kind of wonder why everyone has to push their own streaming service nowadays. I just find it weird because a lot of Sony stuff recently is going against everything they were saying through E3, including the delay of Driveclub being outed only after it was leaked.

I just find it funny that a "console for gamers" can only access music in game like that. Nice feature that most PS3 games didn't have. The no CD's playable and stuff like this makes for bad publicity, though. Especially when it seems like an MS move.

Yeah.  Pretty much all of us.  There was no need for you to bump this thread whatsoever, when you have posted the same opinon in several others.  The Vita supports non-MU MP3 playback during gameplay.  There has been no confirmation that the PS4 cannot do this, only that MU on the PS4 supports this.  Until there is a concrete statement that the PS4 will NOT be able to do this, I suggest you take an aspirin.

TBH its kind of a overrated feature. I have a 360 with music on it and I rarely played with music. Most of the time the in-game sound is better
