I, myself, would like to know if anyone out there actually hears 5.1 surround from any receiver (a receiver with HDMI inputs/next gen-audio decoding or an older 5.1 receiver) when playing a PSN store rental. If you do please reply and give the configuration. Thanks
PS2: slim one, used to maintain perspective on things
PS3 online id: Spyder-97
While the movie is playing, press triangle for options, scroll to audio options and press enter, that should switch the sound from ACC 2ch, to ACC 5.1 ch.
^^^This actually worked!!! I've been wondering about this same issue, and have been pissed off everytime I pay extra for HD 5.1 audio but only to have 2.1 output! I just now rented an HD film from the PSN, and while the movie is playing, I just pressed the triangle button, went to audio options, and found two choices... one was 2.1 and the other was 5.1. It doesn't actually specificially say 2.1 or 5.1, but rather English 1 or English 2... but my receiver shows that one is stereo while the other is surround... the 5.1 sounds great!!! THANK YOU!
I think I have an explanation for it. 5.1 DOES NOT EXIST!!!! I checked the metadata whilst playing back my first (and last) download from PSN and it said only 2 channels are present!!! I a have now emailed Sony re this issue and will be either using amazon or buying Blu-Rays. A word of advice to people who own A/V decoder. Don't bother downloading from Sony!!!. !!!
Maybe PS3 just doesn't support 5.1 audio through HDMI. try the optical cables.
