Why?
I just removed my Discover card from my account so I could add my debit card and I look at my online banking this morning and it says PSN has charged $1 to my checking account.

Still a bit annoying though, what if I had less than a dollar in that account and got charged an overdraft fee by my bank.
A message that says we are charging a dollar to test your account would be welcome in that case.

If you have less than 1 dollar in your bank maybe you shouldn't be buying games. Just kidding.
While I agree with you...I was just using it as an example.

It is a common practice to pre authorize any cards attached to accounts that involve automatic payments (in this case, automatic transfer of funds from card to wallet).
It is nearly always 1 dollar, and gets returned to you usually within a week. Don't worry about it too much unless it never comes back.
Also, I am not positive, but I believe there is information somewhere on the PSN that says this can happen upon adding your card to your account.

No Overdraft for me thanks to American Express Bluebird! I least I had enough to register UK account & US account. I don't have worry also on International Exchange rates with American Express Bluebird.

DO NOT do this, Sony will suspend/ban your account!
The $1.00 charge(s) will be returned to your card/account in a few days.
Just so you know the $1.00 charge(s) is/are Sony/the system checking that the card is not stolen, is registered to the person it's meant to be & has sufficient funds etc, mit's a check for the security & benefit of the consumer, you.
