Well then the games should look a lot better and unfortunately I think all these changes are a waist if the game don't look better and they don't.  Of all the titles for the PS4 only a few will look better, right now there aren't many PS4 games that look better than The Last of Us and Beyond (both PS3 games).

It's funny, x64 architecture for Windows can play x32 architecture games.  Sony doesn't WANT backwards compatability, has nothing to do with technology.  The PS3 wasn't going to be backwards compatible, they said it couldn't be done.  Guess what.  They ended up doing it.  I wouldn't have had any problem with it not being backwards compatible since technology at the time went from DVD to Bluray.  But we're not changing media formats here.  It's the same disc!!  i had no problem going from tapes to CD's, or VHS to DVD, or DVD to Bluray.  I do have a problem with investing $5000 into a Bluray game machine only to have to buy a new Bluray game machine and it won't play the Bluray games I've spent all my money on!!

Imagine you had a collection of 300 Bluray movies.  Bluray players switch technology and the new players won't play those movies.  Sure you can keep watching them on your current Bluray player, but if anything should happen to it you will have to buy a new one and THAT new Bluray player will not play a single Bluray movie in your collection.  It made sense when it was VHS or DVDs.  But Sony switching to a console that only plays SOME Bluray games is nuts.

Developers have had six or seven years to familiarize themselves with the PS3 to use its max potential. Meanwhile they've had maybe two to work on the PS4. If you want to compare graphics compare the launch PS3 games with the launch PS4 ones. Then imagine what the PS4 games will look like six years down the road.

Just buy backups. That's what people do when they're worried about something breaking. PlayStation also has a ten year support cycle. So the PS3 still has at least three years before they stop manufacture.

I really don't think it will take 4 yrs for devs to make the the PS4 games look amazing.. remember its now has an x86 processor architecture basically an advanced PC with a whooping 8 GB GDDR5 memory.. I say about 1yr at best....

They'll continue improving though. Uncharted 2 in 09' looked amazing but compared to The Last of Us... What I was trying to say to Punfisher is give them a little while to improve. The end of cycle PS2 games weren't too diffrent to the launch PS3 titles.

I'm being serious about this for real.

Compatibility has been explained by multiple members here why it isn't happening in disc form.

While both the PS3 and PS4 are using a bluray disc, your logic makes no sense whatsoever.

With this idea of yours, this means Xbox One discs should work on the PS4 as week since that console also uses bluray and same goes for Xbox One -it should be able to play a PS3 and PS4 games.

The hardware differences between the PS3 and PS4 is massive. The PS4 is using an AMD octocore x86 processor while the PS3 is using a Cell POWERPC processor . Entirely different processors and architectures. Sony thought about including the cell chip inside the PS4 like how a PS2 chip was included to allow backwards compatibility on early PS3 consoles, but it would have brought the cost of the console up by $100-$200. So Sony thought of an alternative, they will be using Gaikai to stream PS3 games. It does mean that there might be fees or it might be rolled into PS+, streaming PS3 games for PS4 (and Vita) was announced to be accessible in 2014 during the e3 conference.

So to answer your question, backwards compatibility for PS3 games IS COMING to PS4 via Gaikai streaming format. Just not in disc format due to huge processor changes...

No need to respond to him, or to try and teach him anything.  His posts in this thread definitively show that he doesn't understand a great deal about what B/C entails, and he is unwilling to learn.  In addition, he appears to be nothing more than a graphics nut and doesn't have the ability to comprehend how the additional RAM and power in the PS4 will enhance games immense degrees over what the PS3 can offer.

Any attempt to reason with him will end in failure.  I've made the same mistake in trying to teach other people like him on these forums and it has resulted in zilch.  Just allow him to continue posting statements that make him look more and more out of touch with reality, and maybe he'll eventually just leave, or realize how stupid he is making himself look and cease the trolling.

The disc type is irrelevant. It's the architecture of the ps3 & the ps4's differences that make it incompatible, and the type of coding used to run the two very different systems.

The PS3's Cell Architecture may have been powerful, but it caused them problems. Using a more conventional chip is going to make it easier for developers and make it more likely that the PS5 will be able to emulate PS4 games. It sucks, but keep your PS3. I still have my PS2 and PSOne. (Heck, I still have my NES)

It's not disappointing at all.  I'm glad the PS4 uses totally different architecture than the PS3.  But if a Bluray player can play DVDs then a PS4 should be able to play all Sony Bluray games.  I would be fine if a PS4 does not play DVD.  But we're still talking about Bluray here.

Aside from that, I don't have confidence in Sony to BUY my games anymore.  If I buy a PS4 I sure won't be putting $5000 into it like I did the PS3.  I'll rent games from now on because I know the PS5 will come out and I won't be able to play my PS4 games anymore.

Your PS1 and PS2 games don't have an online community.  My PS3 games do.  The Last of Us just came out and I WAS going to buy it.  But the PS4 will kill the online community and I won't be able to find any co-op matches or even work on the trophies.  If the PS4 was backwards compatible the online communities for these titles will still run strong.  That's just one example.  All the great PS3 titles that normally would have a few years of life left in the multiplayer are gonna get the chop when all the gamers buy their PS4s.

Beyond comes out later this year for the PS3.  That's one title I was really excited about, but if it has any online mode at all I'm going to have to pass.  I can't shell out $65 for a game if I can't even find a match when it comes out.

And how is it fair to developers when they've just made one of the best games the industry has ever seen for a console they don't even make anymore?

Using this logic, the PS3 will be able to play Xbox one games.

First of all, you should have no problem getting the online trophies before the PS4 launches. Secondly, The Last of Us and Beyond are only on PS3, so the PS4 isn't taking anyone away from them. Third, not everyone is getting a PS3, for varius reasons, so you'll have plenty of people to play with

 Developers aren't complaining.

I don't have to understand anything.  Sony has the technology to make it happen.  I want the PS4 to play all Sony Bluray games.  I've had confidence that I could always play my PS3 games and invested $5000 into my hobby.  Had I known then that I soon would no longer be able to play my games anymore I would not have bought and owned a single game.  I would have gone with an online rental membership.

Suppose I do buy the new PS4.  How can I be expected to buy and own my games anymore if the PS5 will come out in 6-7 years and I can't play them anymore?  I've lost confidence in Sony.  Consumers are better off just renting their games.

And yes, I won't buy a game unless it looks good so I am a graphics nut and you're obviously on Sony's PR payroll.  If it wasn't for graphics nuts we'd all still be playing pacman and frogger.  We didn't move from Pong to the PS4 just because people wanted a better framerate.

I'm on my 2nd PS3 because my first one ceases to exist.  I've had this one for awhile and I'm guessing sometime this year or next it will give out and once again I'll have to buy a new one.  But I can't do that if they don't make them anymore.  At that point I will have to buy the new PS4 and I won't be able play my huge gaming collection anymore.
