PS4 HDD: Upgrade questions

12 replies 956 views Edited Oct 3, 2013

I'm getting the ps4 at launch and was wondering how many people were upgrading their harddrive before they even turn the ps4 on for the very first time.  I don't know  whether to just upgrade immediately or if that could possibly mess the new PS4 up.

Upgrading the PS4 hard drive is confirmed, but details on how that is achieved just hasn't been released.  I really want to upgrade on Day One, as well.  I'm willing to bet that, as long as the same hard drive size and bracket are supported, there will be instructions on how to do it in the manual.

I guess I'm not as concerned on the hardware side as I am on the software side.  I'll just have to be patient and wait.

I seriously doubt that there is anything to worry about. Smiley Happy

im going to upgrade mine too. Im mostly going for digital, but not 100% digital. Most likely, the ps4 will use any laptop HDD. So that means any 2.5" size HDD will fit. I hread height is up to 15mm. So the biggiest 2.5" 15mm HDD is 2TB.

I would also advise everyone to upgrade asap due to the fact that with 10 ftp games + any digital purchases, hd installs...the 500gb hd could easily be filled come spring. O_O

It's actually been making me mad that they wont release the specs. On top of getting the correct size hdd, you also have to have one that will transfer data at similar rates as the stock hdd or you could have problems with in-game performance. They obviously already know what hdd they are using stock. The fact that the only comment they have made is "It will work similarly to the ps3" pisses me off. I want to buy my upgraded hdd before I pick up my console on 11-15-13.

I have upgraded my two ps3's for a total of 3 times and the more data you accumulate during the months and years of playing the more frustrating upgrading becomes. I just want to install my ps4s hdd before even playing on it. As I am getting the console on the midnight release I will have no way of getting an hdd bought and ready for install unless they actually tell us the specifications.

Do you think it will be ok to go with a 7200 rpm hdd or should I stay with a 5400 rpm hdd?  I have concerns about heat issues but I also don't know if the faster hdd is worth the extra money.

I'd stick to a 5400rpm , most manufacturers are phasing out 7200rpm drives anyway (I know seagate is for their 2.5' ones). I suggest cjecking out my link below Smiley Wink!
