PS3 controller keeps going to the left ...

8 replies 3998 views Edited Dec 26, 2011

Got a new PS3 for the family yesterday. We set it up with no trouble and have been playing with it for a day and a half.

We have the included Dual-Shock 3 controller that's wireless. That seems fine. But we also have an off-brand wired controller for the second player. That was fine until about an hour ago. All of a sudden it now acts as though the left analog stick is being held to the left, even when no controls are being touched. I can't seem to fix it.

Is this some kind of calibration issue?

Any help appreciated. Thanks VERY much in advance,

Chris

Try pressing the reset button on the back, and then re-syncing it.

Oh boy, and off brand controller? I misread that. Okay, plan B. Try cleaning the stick with some contact cleaner. If that doens't work, then you might have to return it.

I guess you need to stick with the branded PS3 controllers

It could just be a bad controller, but sometimes if an analog stick is held in a certain direction while starting up, it will calibrate that as the center (i.e. the real center would be interpretted as left).  Not sure if that happens on PS3s or maybe with certain controllers, but it's worth a try - turn off the PS3 and start it up again, making sure the stick is centered.

I didn't know this. I have a controller that always has the person walking forward like the joystick is pressed up. I know that it isn't touched when I synch. It's just a bad controller. I wonder if I hold it down and synch if it would go normal? I'm going to try that. It is a Sony controller that came with one of my systems.

Yeah, I've never had it happen on PS3, but on older systems like N64 that's how it worked, so since then I just make sure to leave it alone anyway.  It wouldn't surprise me if it never happens, but it was just a thought.
