PS3 60GB not reading discs - replaced laser & motor - nothing...

20 replies 7732 views Edited Feb 23, 2010

So my 60GB PS3 won't read discs.

I figured it was the laser. I purchased a KEM-400AAA laser assembly and installed it.

The thing STILL doesn't read any disc I throw in it.

I did notice that discs don't even bother to spin up. I went through my install and checked all the ribbons and they are secure. Could the disc sensor on the front of the drive have something to do with it?

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on how to solve this. I miss my PS3

TIA!

u and me are in the same boat...he's a question, did your old one make any sounds when ever u poped a disc in, ive read that in some rare cases that the small chip board below the drive could go bad thus the drive dies....see if that helps. im still not sure for me if its the drive or the chip set???

The drive accepts the disc, however it does nothing with it. Ejecting is fine too. It also makes a noise after the disc is inserted, like the laser is moving in the track, but the disc never spins. It is possible the controller board is bad, but where could I source one? I have no clue if they're specific to certain models.

I would figure that the board doesn't care about the disc, it's all 0's and 1's to it, but it's the software that interprits what to do with the data.

Have you tried re-installing the fw? Or restoring the database (option 3)?

The controller board can be tricky. The chip on the controller is mated with the motherboard. So if it goes bad you have to swap the chip with the mated one. Here's the only info I've found on the subject. It looks fairly complicated, but not impossible with the right tools and some patience.

well i found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300388732800&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT, its the whole curcuit board below the drive. besides im really thinking now its this part that the drive doesnt work, zero sound from the drive when a CD goes in and out , theres only the loading icon when the corning but no spinning or lens movement. yes ive trying the database restore and ETC in that strange menu screen with the power button......still bad

it could just be that the new unit you've fitted is faulty, testing it isn't to difficult, and can be viewed quite easily with the PS3 top cover off, and the metal cover off the BD, a clear CD is used to see what the lasers are doing if anything

Sony, why can't I swap Bluray drive boards ?
