Older 60G PS3 Freezing and Pixel Problems Right Before Freezing

15 replies 3508 views Edited Jan 23, 2010

No matter what game I put it in, it will freeze no matter what it's doing. Sometimes it will even freeze at the PS3 menu. Before it's about to freeze, I get long stretched out black lines running across the screen, and then the screen will pixelate into green and red and other colored little squares, and then the audio fades out and it freezes. I've tried it on different TV's around my house, still freezes. I did pretty much everything Sony told me to do but nothing has helped. Warranty is up, and I sure don't feel like sending it to Sony for $150 when I don't even know what the problem is in the first place. I heard it could be the video card, fried GPU, overheating, HDD, and Blu-Ray reader. I've had this problem for about a month and it's really getting on my last nerves. Any help? Thank you.

Your console's GPU (video card) is on the verge of going bad. Back your data up and send it in to get fixed or buy a new console.

Ah man, what a bummer. Should I send it to Sony? Or go downtown and get a quote from a console repair shop?

It looks like your GPU is overheating. But, that doesn't mean it's actually BAD.

Does the PS3's fan kick into high gear for a while before it happens or is the console running fairly cool? If it's running cool, then something else may be wrong.

Here's what I'd do:
1.
- Take bumblebee104's advice first. Backup and reformat to make sure it's not a software issue.

2.
- Crack open the PS3 and clean it out completely and replace the thermal paste. (There's guides everywhere)
Or:
- Since you don't have a warranty; If you don't trust yourself to take it apart and send it to Sony anyway and shell out the money to fix it.

No the fan stays at normal speed. And inevitably, my warranty is up. But I'll sure try the paste guides and reformat it. Thanks!

Depends on if you can trust those guys. It'll HAVE to be cheaper for them to fix it (Or they wouldn't stay in business).

But, if it's actually a bad processor, it'll probably need a new motherboard. If it's not a bad motherboard, it's either:
- Bad fan not cooling correctly. (GPUs start doing exactly what you showed when they overheat)
- Thermal paste not applied correctly (I would assume not since you have a 60gb model, you would of had problems a long time ago)
- The 4 screws holding down the heat sink to the CPU/GPU is loose and not making perfect contact with the processors, thus overheating.
- Software (Long shot, but it's the easiest fix.)

This link shows my 60gb, when I took it apart a few months ago. (Tons of pics to give you an idea of whats inside)
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=3966632#M3966632

Here's a pic of those 4 screws that hold the heatsink to the processors. It's the 4 large screws in the middle, holding on those 2 thin "Plates":

(NOTE: You can't see one of the 4 screws in the pic, it's being blocked by a metal bracket)

It's only a temporary solution. It'll mess up again. Just send it to Sony and pay up to get another one or trade it in with them for a slim. Your choice.

No it isn't. If it is indeed a overheating problem caused by thermal paste or a faulty fan, it would be a permanent fix. The only "temp fix" is a reflow, and if he needed a reflow, his PS3 wouldn't be working at all.

And if it's a software issue, reformatting (if it fixes it) would be a permanent fix as well.
