My PS3's about 4 years old and its been working perfectly until now. A couple months ago it started freezing while playing Modern Warfare 3 and the Starhawk Beta. Then last month it totally stopped reading blu-ray games and blu-ray movies, but it read dvds. So I took it apart and cleaned the lens. That didn't work either. Then I restored to default settings, and now it doens't even read dvds. What should I do? I don't have warranty obviously, and I'm thinking of buying a kem 400aaa blu-ray lens, but I'm not sure if it would work.

how well did you clean the lense?? i just had a BC 80gig system do the same thing and cleaned it really well with alcohol and not a problem since,i used 95% and you have to be sure to get enough in there to clean the mirror or it wont do you any good, sometimes a little dust on the mirror will make it act up and not even be the lense at all..

You can get your hand on a lens cleaning disk. It has special soft but durable brushes on the bottom that clean the lens. As dust buildup will eventually become a problem. The reason why it might be freezing is because when it's streaming some information from the disk it can't read well. That's my bet.

I agree with Elite Soldier245. i still have fat ps3 i just changed out hard drive, but anyway you have to make sure you keep from dusty areas after you clean. Or its bye bye PS3....

If you don't want to read all of this, do one thing; back up everything you dont want lost forever.
I have a 80GB fatty, I had the same problem, any BR disc based game would freeze KZ2, KZ3, BF:BC2 and would only freeze when attempting to load the next game level. however HDD based games would NOT freeze, BF1943, tetris, wipeoutHD. prior to that cleaning the lens would work for about 2-4 months then I would have to clean it again.
OCT. 2011, it stopped reading any BR after about 20 min. of play and was spotty on DVD's once it cooled down it would read for a little bit then stop, that would lead to freezing or not reading any disc.

shortly after the video I bought a kem-400aaa off ebay, installed it, I have not had a problem since then.
HOWEVER I just got a YLOD a couple days ago.
my opinion: I have been reading everything I can about PS3 and the YLOD, I believe that it is not dust or dirty lens (it does play a part) but the problem is heat, the gpu and cpu put out so much heat that it cooks everything inside the PS3, even if it is clean there is still heat (dust just makes it worse) everything expands and contracts breaking solder joints, and cooking blue ray laser diodes.
assuming that your problem is a dead blue ray diode, swapping out the assembly will work, its just a matter of time before everything dies.
I put new thermal paste my PS3 about 10 months ago which stopped my fan blowing on high at the XMB it also made the air coming out the back warmer (assuming that hot air leaving the PS3 is better than having it stay around the components), when i got the YLOD there was no warnings, no high speed fan, no glitching, no freezing, just playing 1 minute, dead the next.

yeah, but what are the chances that a new blu-ray lens wont work?
