I disagree with that.

Some of my friends are fine when playing online, but behave like needy puppies when I'm somewhere like PS Home. The PS3's 'Stealth Mode' is ideal for when I want to be online, but unavailable.

Not quite sure why, but I don't equate going offline to privacy. However almost all software has the ability to go offline, I would not mind seeing them implement this, even though I would not use it.

@Mightylink Just because YOU don't need it doesn't mean it's not needed.  I can think of a very good reason.  Say you have some friends and you want to enjoy some games by yourself without being a jerk of unfriending them.  And maybe it's just one or two ocassion where you need to be not disturbed.  Having a online but unavailable mode is good.  That is why many messaging apps have it.  Same concept.

Boggles my mind that people can't understand this concept. But then I remembered the world is full of people. Ridiculous ones at that. Well said.

I would love the ability, on my PS4, to be able to appear "busy" or "away" along with being able to play a game online but not show up as if I am online.

EDIT:  I see some people don't get why someone would want this.  I've been gaming a long time and I also hosts, and have hosted, numerous community events revolving around the online aspect of different shooter games.  This means my friends list is large.   I am also the type of person that will feel bad or "guilty" if someone is messaging me to game with them and I'm off doing something else.   I'd rather not have to go that route so this option would make it easier on me.   This way i'm not getting asked to leave one online group and join another.  Also, if I want to trophy hunt (which on the PS4 you need to be signed in or you end up with issues, I've had them as have a few others I game with from playing without the ethernet cable hooked up) but stay online and not hurt anyone's feelings by refusing to join them online now I could.

The problem with the 'Away' status that the PS3 has is that it does absolutely nothing. It doesn't generate any advisory messages to someone who is about to send you a message, and people just do not take notice of it.

I'm not a girl (i think you said you were a girl in another thread in OT) but I think you and I want it for the same reason.   When I come online I usually get several party invites and messages saying "join me in this game" and I feel guilty when I don't join someone.   That being said I'd still prefer to have people asking and have to feel guilty than have no one excited when I sign in!
