Need opinion on YLOD Ps3

5 replies 45 views Edited Jan 24, 2012

I need an opinion whether my ps3 is repairable using the Ylod guide on here that replaces the heat sink paste and reflows the motherboard.

It is an 80gb version and I've had it since about launch, just wanted to know if it is repairable before I buy the things needed to repair

Thanks

It is not a permanent repair. It is only a temporary repair to let you get your data off of it. For a permanent repair, you need to send it in to a third party for a proper reball repair to replace the solder balls under the graphics chip. Try asking Endless Electronics.

Hmm, It seems I may have to purchase a new ps3. I live in Australia and to ship the console over to Endless Electronics and get it fixed could very well cost close to a new ps3 console. Thanks for the help

If I bought a new ps3, would I be able to replace the hard drive with my old one to get my data?

I recommend that you first search in your country for a place that does reball repairs, I think there might be at least one place.

Unfortunately you can't transfer your data to a new PS3 from your old hard drive, the contents of the drive is digitally signed to that console, if you put the drive in a new console, you will be prompted to format the hard drive.

The only way around this is to be a PlayStation + member, and use the cloud storage option...

I just want to add that you need to have your backups made before your PS3 dies. Cloud Storage is handy for certain copy-prohibited game saves.
