Need help to setup up a 5 GHz connection from my linksys E3000 to PS3?

11 replies 12355 views Edited May 1, 2010

I have been trying like crazy to connect to my 5GHz connection on my Linksys wireless-N router.  It has Dual band...2.4 and 5. It also supports A, B,G and N connections. I can connect to the 2.4 connection with no problem but the 5 is another story.  I called up Linksys and they said its because the PS3 does not have an A Adapter and that is why it can't see the 5GHz connection.  I also called Playstation support and they said that I had to get a B or G router for my Playstaion to work.  I think one or both are full of it.  I come on here and see that people are connected to 5 GHz connection all the time.  Could someone please help me get to the bottom of this?  Thanks in advance!!!!

I'm pretty sure Linksys was correct in what they told you. I don't think the 54g wireless on the ps3 can pickup the 5 ghz signal. My wireless N adapter on my pc can't even pick up 5 ghz. If you got it to work at 2.4 ghz and it runs smooth I guess you will have to do with that.

You would also have to put the router in pure G mode or mixed mode for the ps3 to connect to the router.

WiFi is a standard 802.11a/b/g/n that operates within the 2.4GHz band. The 5.8Ghz band is used to link two wireless routers/AP's together that cannot be reachable via an ethernet cable. The 5.8 link makes the routers think there are connected via a cable thus expanding the coverage area of your wireless signal. There is no such device that will allow a standard wifi connection to connect to a 5.8GHz signal.

Hope that answers your question.

The PS3 wireless connectivity is 802.11b/g.  This is a hardware restriction and will not/can not be upgraded through a firmware update.

By comparison, the PSP (even the PSPgo) is restricted to 802.11b WiFi connection.

LOL........  That's nice! But that has nothing to do with wireless connectivity. Also, you have never hit speeds of 5Gbps or more. That's equivalent to 5000Mbps which is like downloading a 700MB movie in just over a second.

Wireless a actually operates at 5 GHz. Wireless N routers can operate at 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or both, depending on the router. Operation at 5 GHz offers less overlap and less interference from other access points and radios. Operation at 2.4 GHz allows backwards compatibility.

In any case, BBurgSteve nailed it. The PS3 radio is not capable of 5 GHz operation.

So even though linksys advertises the e3000 as a great solution to speed up and improve hd video playback (and they even have the xbox and ps3 listed in the ad) it really doesn't improve anything over a cheaper router? The E3000 looks liek the best bang for the buck, but I'm getting signal drop to 85% on occasion, and as a result, occasionally choppy hd playback.

I just installed it yesterday, and its an upgrade specifically to resolve our playback issues, but I'm thinking my old netgear g router was just as good, since the issues persist.

The only way to get the N 5 ghz to work is get the extra hardware to connect to the PS3's Ethernet port that supports this standard. Another thing you might want to try is change the broadcast channel on the router to reduce interference from any source of EF emissions.
