My thermal "upgrade" experience

22 replies 47 views Edited Mar 18, 2012

I wanted to pass along a couple things I noticed today when I went to replace pads, maybe this could benefit others.

When you apply paste and do a test with the heat sink and pull it back off, you aren't getting a good look at how much the paste will spread. You have to assemble, run it for a few days and then go back and look again. When I opened mine up today, I had paste oozing out the sides because I put more than was really needed. I put more because my test with putting the heat sink on and taking it back off showed a very small circle of paste. So I thought I needed much more.

That 19 blade fan is LOUD compared to the 15 blade fan in the MSG4 bundle PS3. I'm put the new fan in, and I'm considering swapping it back for the factory fan. I'll have to give it a couple days and see if I can't get used to it.

Did you buy an OEM 19 blade fan, or a new Talismoon 19 blade fan. I have heard several times that the Talismoon ones can be noisy if not installed correctly...

It's the Talismoon. I don't know how you can install it incorrectly though. You line it up and screw it in. It's not noisy from hitting anything, which is what I've hear about this fan as well. It's just noisy from the airflow sound and a little bit of a hum as well.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I have only read about 15 and 19 blades. I have to agree the 15 blade is much quieter, and I am considering putting it back in. I'm going to give it a few days first though.

Perhaps these fans are not made at exactly the same specification as the OEM 19 blade fans which may be the reason you are seeing a difference, but from my experience the OEM 19 blade fan is quieter than the OEM 15 blade fan, at the very least you are getting a better airflow with the 19 blade fan...

I've looked and looked for 19 blade fans. Talismoon seems to be the only source. I can't find the OEM version you are referring to .

I'm surprised to hear you say that. They have been available on eBay for years, and also Amazon. Both of these listings are posted on my Squidoo lens...
