Jak and Daxter. The very reason I am a gamer, and the very reason I follow gaming news to the extent I do. Also the reason I bought a Playstation 3 as soon as I was able to, knowing that some day franchises like Jak and Daxter (as well as Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper) would return in high definition.
I recieved Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy as a gift in 2002. At the time it was one of the only PS2 games I owned, so naturally it was the game I played over and over and fell in love with. Everything about the game was awesome. The characters were interesting, the writing was hilarious, the gameplay simple yet fun, and most of all the atmosphere was amazing. One large open world with no loading screens made it a blast to explore every last locale, and the music fit perfectly making the world seem truly believable.
So when I walked into my local Gamestop in 2004 and saw an ad and release date for Jak II, I preordered no questions asked. First time I ever did that, and the last time I ever did that. Picked up the game on day one and played it without knowing anything of the changes made to the game, which were indeed tremendous. However, the changes didn't phase me. I played the game and enjoyed it til the end (even after dying over and over).
It was at this point that I began exploring franchises like Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper, and was pleasantly surprised to find cameos within the games. At this time I also started looking up gaming news online, finding sites with cheat codes and the like. It was where I began finding out about cool new games, such as Jak 3.
From then on, I've bought everything Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Sucker Punch have released. The transition to PS3 was great, with games like Uncharted, Resistance, inFamous, the continuation of Ratchet and Clank, and now the soon to be release Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Only one thing has been missing since: Jak and Daxter.
Ever since Jak X: Combat Racing released in 2005, I've been waiting for the return of the dynamic-duo in full form. Sure Jak has been in a few games since then, but never have we seen a full on Jak 4 on PS3. I've been waiting for the announcement every E3 that I've watched, but my hopes have yet to be fulfilled. They were even someone crushed upon the news that Naughty Dog scrapped Jak 4 for The Last of Us (which I will be buying day one).
So in short, Jak and Daxter is at the heart of my gaming. It initiated my loyalty in the PlayStation brand, and I've since grown up with companies such as Naughty Dog. My PS2 collection consisted of about 20 games, most of which are the games I listed above. My PS3 collection is currently at 50+ disc based games, along with a subscription to PlayStation Plus. All due to my favorite franchise of all-time: Jak and Daxter.
I continue to wait for the return of a true Jak and Daxter game, even after the 8 years that have passed since Jak 3 released. In fact, I still have a Jak 3 poster hanging on my wall that I put up on launch day. It has never come down.
Meanwhile, guess who I'll be playing as in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
