Is the Playstation Vita safe to charge when a thunder storm is going on?

10 replies 204 views Edited Jul 27, 2012

My dad told me like a month ago yes, but now he says he is unsure... but he still believes its fine. Where I live for some reason the electricity goes out a lot when it rains or thunder because our electricity is run overground not underground like most places/towns/cities.

I've done it before, I didn't have any problems. Power went out, power came back, still charges and works fine for me.

If you're that unsure, just plug it into a surge protector.

i thought when lightning hit a house most things plugged in will over power and can mess up. but a if it goes out just cuz if winds or rain  it should be ok not sure though.

I've charged mine during a major storm with no troubles. However I have never lost power at my house either. I'm pretty lucky that I live on the grid with the Fire Department and Hospital. The best way to be safe is not to charge it during a storm. If you absolutely must charge it during a storm, use a surge protector.

Generally speaking it's not when the power goes out that you'll generally have a problem, it's when the power rushes back in. It also depends on what happens. If something's exploded down the line the backlash could do a lot of damage to electronics within a radius.

But I'm no electrician, just going with personal experience.

Correct. Losing power isn't usually a problem, but the surge is.

Surge Protectors protect against Electrical Surges. Electrical Surges break your stuff.

A Surge is when the electricity coming out of your wall outlet suddenly increases beyond acceptable ranges. Say, you have electronics plugged into the wall, normally at 120V. Suddenly, a fault in the power grid causes the voltage to spike to, say, 200. Whatever you have on the wall would be destroyed due to overvoltage burning them out.

Yes, Surge protectors can help surges from damaging your stuff, but think of it as a shield. A strong enough surge can penetrate the shield and still damage your equipment. (And it has happened before.)
