I think the hard part is applying the right amount and getting good contact with the heat sinks. (aside from opening the ps3)

A very popular TIM(Thermal Interface Material). Once it was hailed as the greatest, and it's still very good today.

No, neither is cleaning it. Like the user above me said you need to worry about applying the right amount, less is more charmin!

i have finally open my CECHK01 model and applied arctic silver 5 and succeded on the first try!!

here are some pictures:

so this is how the Heatsink looks like on the 80GB core model (CECHK01)

Here are the RSX and the CELL chips:

Here is a closer look at the chips, p.s. im amazed at how cheap the thermal paste was and also surprised that my ps3 not even once overheated on me.

well thats it sorry i don't got anymore pictures, it just that i really wanted to do it fast and fire up the ps3 and see that everything works just

 fine.

and i was amazed at how quite the fan started when i booted up my ps3, people were right about arctic silver 5!! it does give you immediate results!!

I did the same with my slim yesterday - that was wise decision !!

There are a variety of causes, there is no one concrete cause that I've read about yet.

Can I ask why did you do it?
Because you got the YLOD? or to prevent one?

i had my 80GB ps3 since launch & its working perfectly so far & i've been using it a lot, do i need to worry about YLOD?
