Re: How to use a USB external Hard Drive on your PS3

Ok just so you all know the Win XP FORMAT command has an option for format disks as FAT32.   No need for Swissnife.

Winkey + R

typein CMD

a command window will open

type FORMAT /?

this will show you the options you can specify.

If I get a new 1TB HD and format it to FAT or FAT32, will my PS3 recognize the new external HD and the empty space it provides? Will I be able to install future games to the new external HD...

No. Only media and backups can be saved to external hard drives. Games, game DLC, and game save data must be located on the internal HDD to be playable.

Your best solution is to upgrade your internal HDD. It's actually quite simple to do. Instructions are in the Safety & Support manual that came with your PS3, and large notebook HDDs are pretty affordable now. You will still need an external HDD to make a backup.

My friend and I were thinking of buying a external drive and backing up both our ps3 slim's onto it , will that be possible?

Yes, but the backups are automatically named using the date and time (you can't name them yourself), so you will have to keep notes on who's backup is which name.

Won't work on large drives. It will seem to work (it will try to format), but in the end it will fail, telling you the drive cannot be formatted.

Your backup drive should be formatted to FAT. I haven't had much success with FAT32, some devices just won't get reconized. So save your time and use FAT.

As for size, I have a 120gig back up that worked as FAT, not sure how large you can go for external format changes.

A WARNING TO ALL: Dont insert a external while anything is loading from HDD. I now have a 120gig that can't be accessed, just freezes or bogs down my PC & PS3. WAIT FOR YELLOW LIGHT TO STOP BLINKING.

Great work PD so far, keep the DLC coming!

A 120GB drive will not format to FAT, as fat as a limit of 2GB.  FAT32 is the partition format that is needed.
