So I did all that it's FAT32 got the folders named correctly and everything, hooked up fine to the PS3. I just wanted to make sure that everything goes well and if  I start downloading games beyond the PS3's hard drive capacity that it will automatically save to the extra space on my external hard drive? Or am I stuck only able to download 32GB of games...

The external hard drive can only be used for backups and media. You can't run games off ot it. You can upgrade your internal HDD if you want to do that.

Will this work for games that need more storage space to actually play? I formatted everything and when I plug it in the files show up for videos and games and things but when I try to play the game I downloaded, it still says there's not enough memory to play the game (The Last of Us). Does the game need to be downloaded to the external hard drive and if so how do you do that? Or what could the problem be?
