Well I've been here long enough to notice you people are self proclaimed know it alls that gang up on the people that come here for help and try to make them feel dumb. I don't care who the list came from. The blu ray drives are being bought in bulk, at $66 a piece? I don't think so. If you truly believe that, you've lost your mind. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that they get them at a discounted rate, much cheaper than the average person pays. Therefore I do believe Sony is getting a better deal on their hardware than I do.

The typical business model for gaming consoles is to sell it at a loss, and make a profit on the sale of games. It is the classic razor/razor blade business model. Eventually over time the console is able to be sold at a profit. Nintendo is the only company that tends to always sell there consoles at a profit.

3 years is fair but 5 is more wishful thinking on a $200-300 system

Comes down to how often you use the console and how long your gaming sessions are

5 years seems reasonable to me. At least near the release of the next gen. 3 years if you're rough on it maybe. But blu ray drives failing 6 months or less because of "dust" or "smoke" build up? My dvd player is fine. Actually my latest PS3 is fine, but my previous 2 were duds in under a year.
