8 replies 676 views Edited Oct 3, 2013

Hello forums, I'm looking for some suggestions for a decent pair of headphones to go with my turtle beach dss sound processor. I'm not looking to spend alot probably most im willing to spend is $50-$60.

Over the ear style preferred, not looking for "gaming headsets" just a good pair of headphones

It's hard to beat Sennheiser phones in that price range. Try some HD 202's or 203's. Both in your price range and excellent.

Ask Murderstyle75 on the forums about it. He probably knows more about the subject than anyone else. I'm sure he could give you some good advice.

Thank you Sony, for putting gamers first. It's good to be back!

Samson SR 850's are what you want. Comfy, exact, perfect amount of BASS, semi open design, wide sound stage, 32ohms 10hz-30khz frequency.. dynamic.. Best of all, Cheap!! They sound great out if the box but even better once they burn in.

A lot of headphones, especially "Gaming" headphones are closed style phones and while they do work for positional sounds you get too much boom and sometimes echo in game that can get distracting.. SO the semi open cans are just right.

Here they are for $40. http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Samson-SR850-Headband-Headphones-Black-/114560688

One other thing I would recommend as well is eventually upgrading to the Astro Mixamp of you notice hissing from the DSS.

I also recommend this headset and did so to another user. The Samson sound pretty great and for the price your paying of $40 - $50 , they sound like something you would pay over hundreds of dollars for. DSS is a good start point I believe for surround sound pulled into your headset but eventually like Murderstyle75 said, you want to eventually upgrade to the cream of the crop best quality surround sound plug and play unit - the Astro Mixamp. I'll say that once I jumped to the Mixamp, I've been a fan and yearly customer of Astro for over three years now (never once looked at Turtle Beach after either, just not of the same quality). The sounds quality is unmatched and surround sound produced from it is for a word, Fantastic!

And what these headphones actually are is an OEM version of the Superlux HD668B's. The only real differences are the 668's have a detachable cord and are 56 Ohms while the Samson's are 32 Ohms. Both the Mixamp and DSS are rated for 32 Ohms although I have heard the Astro Mixamp will push up to 200 Ohms before things start to get quiet and you have to double amp it.

These headphones audio wise are a mix between the AKG Q701's and Beyerdynamic DT990's. Both excellent headphones but insanely expensive. The Q701's sell for $225 on Amazon and $350 on AKG's site. The original list price was $479. The DT990's sell for $292 but list for $425.

What they basically are is the best of the two which works very well for gaming. They have more bass than the Q701 but keeps the bright highs and detail. Less bass the the Dt990 but clearer mids. A really great headphone for the price.
