New firmware...only semi-useful thing is auto shutdown after 10 minutes. Everything else is crap. Don't do this crap to us again, Sony. We have to suffer through mandatory ps3 updates that don't give us anything we want, or really even use (still waiting for more ps3 music visualizations, btw, and hopefully you guys will quit sitting on your thumbs and put the existing vizualizations on vita as well? Hmmm?). What Vita owners want is increased funtionality, not improved functionality. We want to play our minis and psOne games. Ideally, we would like, in addition to that ability, the ability to play psn exclusive, download-only titles like Tekken 5dr, MvC2, SF3, etc. (dreaming there). We want more funtionality so the wait for more Vita games isn't so painful, and to basically be ably to take our library everywhere. Speaking of...here's an idea while you're giving us apps: KINDLE w/ integrated amazon store. Also, how about a navigation app that can be used OFFLINE, since not all of us want to be raped by Att, and avoided the 3g model. You screwed the pooch locking up with Att. You're pushing online stuff pretty hard, but who the hell has online everywhere they go? Most of us, our connection is at home and through our cell provider.
I'm only going to comment on the WiFi issue... Yes, it would have been nice if the 3G hadn't been locked to one carrier, but, apple did pretty well for themselves with the iPhone being locked to AT&T in the beginning, and how long was that? And if you think there are no free "Hot Spots" out there, so we are only "online at home", try crawling out from under your rock. It's pretty nice out in the real world...
I can name at least 10 different local, mom and pop, non "chain" places that offer free WiFi where I live, and where lived even 5 years ago. Not to mention Starbucks and Mc Donnalds. Plus, are your friends really that cheap/paraniod that they don't at least enter in their WiFi info themselves if you ask?
It's not that hard to connect to WiFi only when away from home...
I never said there was no free wifi out there, and probably should have explicitly said so for people like yourself who would make such an assumption about my statement*. I'm saying that most of the apps, like the navigation app, are predicated on the thought that the user has constant internet access wherever they are. Everyone knows about free wifi. We need some apps that can also be used offline...such as the navigation app. Having it need online just to download map packs would make it infinitely more useful.
*I don't know about the rest of you, but my average day is like this: Work? No wifi. At the bus terminal waiting for the bus home? No wifi. Home? Internet. Sure, I COULD choose to go out of my way and hang out in front of a casino and log in as Guest, but that's about it. There's no McDonald's anywhere near my travel routes. These mom and pop places with wifi...they don't exist here in Tampa, Fla. Maybe California or New York. Not all people have lots of access to free wifi in a convenient manner. On the weekends, I go shopping at Sam's Club, Walmart, and Publix. There's free Wifi at Sam's Club, but I don't tend to hang out in a store like some loitering teen. I''m only there long enough to get my stuff, pay for it after waiting in line, then leave.
dont forget to mention the horrible browser. You give me a twitter app but opening a link from twitter to actually read the article in the browser is painful enough that I just stop using twitter period. Im really not sure what's going on here, based on the Vita spec, shouldnt the browser be the least thing to worry about? my 2 yrs old phone (Original Droid) has a better browser. How crazy is that? Anyway, I would love to play some PSN Exclusive games on the vita (dreaming here as well). Sony should at least let us play all the psp games on the vita. I bought pixeljunk monster deluxe for psp and it's not being recognized even after putting it on the ps3. I remember when I first got the vita, i just put my iPod touch away in the drawer. Now im putting my vita away and went back to my iPod. Hopefully the wait will end soon as the month of May and June seem to be promessing :-)
@Rhino, just out of curiosity, what exactly would you want from a navigation app offline? To me it's like asking for a music player that doesn't use speakers...
@pmarc, Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe doesn't seem to be playable on the Vita at the moment, but just in case you didn't know (because I didn't either), the Vita is only going to recognize games on your PS3 (PSP and Minis) if they have not been installed on your PS3. Downloaded, but not installed. At least, that's what I've been told. I don't see the point in downloading to the PS3 if it's not going to be installed, so I haven't tried yet.
Also, Sony IS working on getting more PSP/Mini games playable on the Vita, but there are licensing and/or compatibility issues to work through.
I downloaded pixeljunk monster deluxe on the ps3 to be able to transfer it to my vita. That's what I had to do for Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. I couldnt directly download it from the vita but at least I can still transfer it. PSP games cant be installed anyway, so I think that will only apply to Minis. I was under the impression that the games that cant be downloaded directly on the vita can be transfered via PS3. Well since the vita wont recognized pixeljunk deluxe I guess my assupmtion was wrong.Honestly, I havent thought about the licenses kinks that need to be worked out. Thanks for pointing that out.
PSP games can be "installed" to the PS3, just not played on. I have my PS3 view set to "Albums", my PSP games get installed and then set to the album "PSP". In fact, I'm pretty sure you have to install the PSP games in order to transfer to the PSP. Like when you first download a new game/app, and it sits on top of the list? That uninstalled game cannot be transfered to a PSP, but it has to be like that, uninstalled, to be transfered to the Vita.
At least, that's how I understand it for the Vita. I have yet to do that because I install everything once downloaded...
I dont think so. When I press X on the PSP game, it asks me if I want to transfer it to a PSP. I dont have an option for install. Like I mentioned before, I was able to transfer MGS: Peace Walker and I didnt have to install it. It still has the bubble look on top of my game folders. I think you are confusing it with PSOne and Minis. in order to play PSOne games on your PS3, I think you would need install it. There is no reason really to install the PSP games on the PS3 since you cant play them.
