FF games on a 32" HDTV ?

[ Edited ]

Hey,

I have been lurking around to figure out what is the best solution to play my most beloved saga.

Current situation:

I have no TV / computer monitor.

I have a PS2.

Which is the best way to play FF 1 - 12 ?

I have been considering buying a 32" 1080p HDTV

Samsung UN32EH5300

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN32EH5300FXZA-specs

Inputs & Outputs:

If I choose the PS2:

I can hook up my PS2 to that HDTV using  PS3 component cables.

Also I could use the Digital Audio Out (Optical).

The resolution available are:

480i/480p,720p/1080i,1080p

So here are my worries considering I want to play my PS1 Final Fantasy games;

  • Can I play in with 4:3 ratio ?
  • Can I actually hook up my PS2 using component cables as I said ?
  • Do you think the quality of the image will be good, or will it be utterly jaggy.. ?

To make it simple:

Do you think playing with my PS2 hooked up with component cables, the image will look like this:

I could also buy a refurnished PS3 60Go... Hoping it plays my FF games and it is not banned from the PSN.

But, I am first considering the less costly solution.

My knowledge when it comes to HDTVs is pretty poor so...

any feedback / opinions / advises are greatly appreciated!!!

THANK YOU!!!

  • Can I actually hook up my PS2 using component cables as I said ? Yes. While there are SOME games that support 1080i, a literal handfull, the PS2 will play perfectly fine

  • Do you think the quality of the image will be good, or will it be utterly jaggy.. ? It will be the same as if playing on a non-HDTV. But because the native resolution of most PS2 games are barely 480i/p, it might look a bit "wierd" on the HDTV. If you get either a PS2 or a BC PS3, you can adjust the settings so that it will look normal. Both the PS2 and BC PS3 have a setting for PS1 games that will smooth out the textures.

More or less yes.

I could also buy a refurnished PS3 60Go... Hoping it plays my FF games and it is not banned from the PSN.

Just in case you end up looking for a BC PS3, someone pointed this out on ebay a few weeks ago... might be worth a look...

Any HDTV will do.... if you're on a budget, I recommend anything from Insignia, VizioI got my 32" Insignia for $250.

THANK YOU!!!

If you want to play those games and older ones you may want to find an old CRT television. You could find a big one for cheap these days plus the games were made for that resolution.

I feel like you can get an old CRT for free... Have you ever tried getting rid of one before? ><

SD games like the old FF games you're talking about will always look their best on a non HD TV. SD games actually look worse on a HD than they do on a old SD TV. Always match your resolution for best picture quality.

It will look better on a CRT.

Although, the guy on this video below plays FF7 on a 32" HDTV with smoothing option on.
