External or portable hard drive compatible with the PS3???

18 replies 1998 views Edited Dec 31, 2007
I just got a PS3 for Christmas and it's pretty much the basic model; 20gb hard drive version.  I can tell that this came from eBay. Anyway, I want to upgrade the hard drive to something much bigger. Can I use an external or portable 500gb hard driive via USB on my PS3? If so, which ones are compatible? Please help!

It has to be FAT32 formatted. Also, you cannot put games or demos on an external HDD.

I am pretty sure you can. Not sure about requirements though. I believe it would be treated as a flash drive.

Can you save information on it like a PS2 memory card?

No.

External drives are for videos, music, and pictures.
And you can do backups to them.

replaceing the HD is a much better option. Less clutter and much more efficent. I have the 20 gig also, and I replaced mine with a 160 gig. Just make sure its the 2.5 laptop drives and make sure its a Serial ATA model which is advice alot of poeple fail to mention somtimes. Its very easy to do aswell.

This thread might help for information about changing the internal drive.  There is also a large listing of compatibe drives in the second post.

That's very practical; especially for the 20GB model.

I have the 60GB model and updated it to a 120GB with a 2.5 SATA drive, same RPMs as the original and it cost me under $100. It was on sale at the time so I don't remember the price. Fantastic purchase. I bought an hdd enclosure for the original 60GB hard drive and now use that as a portable hdd with music, movies and pictures. As well as to back up any info from my PS3, PSP or PC.

Changing the hard drive is really very simple and took me all of 5 minutes.

Good luck, it's worth it!

I just bought a 1TB WD USB Hard Drive for $250 +tax
I would buy a 320gb internal sata 2.5" WD drive but it's about $215 on newegg.com and I would have to transfer current 60gb info to it with no guarantee that demos and other info would function when transferred or transfer at all...plus it's 680gb less than a 1TB drive.

FAT32 format for ANY DRIVE or MEDIA for PS3 to recognize it..I tried NTFS drives just to see and NOTHING...
The 1TB USB drive was already formatted to FAT32 as most drives are.
And if it is formatted to NTFS you can reformat it to FAT32 but it has to be empty first...
