Even If Your PS3's Disc Drive Breaks It's Still Just As Useful

9 replies 11 views Edited Feb 29, 2012

In theory your PS3 doesn't even need a disc drive as you can get pretty much any game on disc on the PSN Store via Digital DL. Same kinda goes for movies and such and granted the selections on the PSN Store aren't as good the selections of discs. Never the less good to know if anyones PS3's Disc Drive ever breaks for watever reason it will still be just as good with or without it. Assuming of course you have a rather large HDD of course.

Yea but the selections are growing every week as the PSN Store gets more and moe PS3 Games added to the store. Most NEW games will be seeing a assured Digital release from now on.

Yeah it's growing, but it's nowhere near all games, even new games.  Looking at games released this year (from wikipedia):

Final Fantasy XIII-2

NeverDead

Soulcalibur V

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

The Darkness II

Grand Slam Tennis 2

UFC Undisputed 3

Twisted Metal

Asura's Wrath

Syndicate

Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2

Binary Domain

SSX

Feel free to correct me, but I don't remember seeing any of those are in the store, and certainly not the majority.  Surely they want to add as many as they can, but at this time, you have to expect to wait for downloadable games.

They don't even have the darkness 1 on the store, and that game is pretty hard to find on disc, but the selection is still growing for digital, they are getting newer games on the store all the time, look at Mass Effect 3, it comes out on March 6 and it's already been confirmed that it will be added to the PSN store (which you can currently pre order it on the PSN) that day as well. and some of the more recent games being added came out in 2011, so they are increasing the amount of digital full PS3 games.

With ME3 they said there would even be a midnight release on the PSN store; I don't think that's been done before.

Mayb there waiting on Cusumer Response to Digital PS3 Game DL's. If alot of ppl buy them then mayb than they will start drastically increasing the PSN Store's Selections.

There is a huge problem with the accuracy of this statement.

Losing the disc drive on the PS3 reduces it's functionality by 50%.

You lose the ability to play games from disc.  And anyone thinking that there is even a fraction of the games available digitally as there are on disc, really needs to open their eyes.

You loose the ability to play DVDs and BluRay movies.  The PS Video store, selection is no where near what a video store is.  Also, the quality of HD digital download movies is nothing compared to the quality from a BluRay Disc, and it never will be.  Not when you are compressing a 20 gig movie down to 4 gigs or so.

You loose the ability to play CDs.

You loose the ability to play PS1 Discs.  Re buying them from the PSN is not an option if you already own them.

Your statement would have been far more accurate if you said that Even if the disc drive breaks, it still has some use.  But to say it is just as useful is a gross exaggeration.

Maybe, but when digital releases are coming later and are more expensive, they aren't giving us a good reason to buy most of them digitally.  Plus it takes up a lot of hard drive space.  I only buy downloadable versions when it's much cheaper than the physical copy.  If they want them to sell, it's not hard to figure out that more options at the same price or cheaper than physical copies would go a long way.

They may take our Other OS,
or our PSN.

But they will never take,

OUR FREEDOM!!!

Obviously it isn't as Useful but my point is it won't be Completely useless.
