Error: The Back Up Operation Could Not Be Completed (80010038)

14 replies 6375 views Edited Nov 25, 2009

Okay so I just ran the back up utility for a 3rd time. 1st and 2nd time 80% and the 3rd time 81%.

Anyone know what this error code means?

Anyone know if there is a place to look up error codes to figure out what they mean?

i did some research and it seems that error code points to a corruption somewhere in the data you are trying to back up. sometimes people will get this code when trying to download a PSN game. could mean the hard drive is corrupted beyond fixing. sony has no support for this error code. no suprise there. most of the time error codes are better to be searched elsewhere than to search sony's support for them. what does that tell you about sony's support. it tells me that they don't have a clue what they are doing. i can't remember but i think i was in one of your earlier threads. have we talked about trying safe mode to resolve your problem?

The error code isn't coming up on Sony's tool. Here's the link to where you look up codes.

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=939

If you're backing up your system the goal is to back up your profile and game saves. The other things like Music, Video, Photos can be backed up individually. If you have videos downloaded from the PSN, back those up by pressing and using the built in backup.

When I backed up my system, it took about 10 mins on the backup utility and the backup file was less than 1GB.

Try this:

1. Delete any installed games from the PSN (you can redownload them later)

2. Manually backup photos, videos, and music by highliging it, press then copy them to your Portable HDD. Delete the files when you're done. This will create a smaller back up.

3. Go to Game Data utility and delete all the saved data from games. If you have DLC, you can redownload it from the store.

4. Go to BD Data utility and delete any data that's in there.

5. Go to trophies and sync them with the server.

6. Now you're ready to back up your profile and game saves. Go to > > >

7. Follow the on screen instructions.

If followed correctly, it should not take longer than 15 mins to be finished with the backup utility.

I followed all those steps, and the backup utility still gets the error message when it's about 95% complete.

Maybe there's a corrupt save file?

could be, but it looks like it is doing better so i think you are heading in the right direction. as krassah suggested, there is a small chance option #3 in safe mode might help. what update are you running on?

it's saying the hard disk file is corrupted and will be restored after each and every time after running #3 in safe mode

this is a continuos loop

No, i have basically been on this continuous loop at least 10 times in a row in #3. Option #4 says it cannot find the hard drive.
