Does the PSP have any internal memory?

Does the PSP 1000 have any built in memory or do i need a memory stick duo?

Only PSP that had internal memory was the PSPGO.

The PSP 1000, 2000, 3000 and Street models all have no internal memory for digital games or etc. You can still play games, but you will not be able to save your game or download anything. The only PSP to have internal memory was the PSPGo, which had 8GB or 16GB built in depending on the model. I think early PSPGos had 8GB, and later current models have 16GB. 

 

Anyways, yes, you need a pro duo. Thankfully, they are cheaper now. You can get a 30GB for like $50.
