It was out of warranty, so I had to pay $150 for a replacement (that problem can't be repaired; they send you a knew system). I ended up buying a Slim and decided to sell the replacement system. I got the replacement back... and out of the box it had the YLOD. It's unbelievable. Thank God that Sony gives us a 90 day warranty on repairs or replacements.
My point of saying all this: everyone saying the YLOD is simply from overheating or something the user does, be quiet. Those may be able to cause the YLOD, but aren't the only ways it happens. Anyway, it realy shocked me when my first system got it... so imagine my feeling when the replacement had the EXACT same thing right out of the box. Thankfully I had the Slim to keep me going.
And no, it wasn't the same system that they had returned. It had a different serial number, etc.
Just always get the longest waranty possible. That goes for anything, though.
wow! way to bring back a 2 month old thread!

I bought one of the first PS3 Slims when they first came out and now after 9 months it appears to be over heating after an hour into Bluray movie watching (the picture pixelates really bad, changed disc and same thing). It will continue until turned off and alowed to cool off then plays normal.
Turned on the ceiling fan one time while it was pixelating and it started to play fine...... What does that tell you???
It sits on a glass shelf next to the center channel speaker and nothing else on 3 sides.
Just bought a replacement while this one goes to the shop!

It's not large enough for them to recall them but my 60GB and lots of my friends have all YLOD'd and I think that it's large enough to be something for people to worry about.YLOD is a general hardware failure and doesn't necessarily mean overheating. Technically, very few PS3s have actually overheated, and most of those were a result of user error.
True
in fact Ive never read about a YLOD caused by overheating
as in the overheating warning showed up and the system turned itself off
and not the average YLOD victim claiming that it overheated without knowing what their are talking about
So far YLOD has been cracks in the solder, a bad HDD or a bad PSU
even slims get YLOD
and even slims will overheat if you dont follow the manual

And how do you know the problem is overheating ?

Ariel - What do you think it is with my system as described?
My 23 years experience in troubleshooting electronics to the component level tells me that the repeatable symptoms I am observing are a result of circuitry getting too hot.
BTW it is extremely hot to the touch to the point it will burn my finger when it starts to pixelate.
Is there a way to check the internal temp? And a known operating range?

IDK thats why I was asking
you only mention pixelation
that isnt common in PS3s so I dont know, what else was wrong with the PS3 ?
was it a problem with a certain game or with all games ? was there pixelation at the XMB ?
was it only pixelation or did you see other things ?

I dont know about the internal
outside it should be 30-40ºC
and the system should try to stay at 40
