Dead PS3...hard drive transfer question...

12 replies 344 views Edited Mar 28, 2009
So, i know i'm an idiot and YES i should have backed up my ps3 info.  But my old 60gig ps3 died today, but the HD still works.  Just bought an 80 gig version.  Tried to plop the 60 gig into the new PS3 and wouldn't load up.  Any other way of getting old info from the 60 gig onto new 80 gig ps3?

Nope; Putting your 'old' HDD into a new system will only have you to reformat the drive. Thus losing all your files.

So backing it up while you still can, is the only way to get your files.

now im not sure if this would work but you might be able to buy a 2.5 SATA hdd enclosure and put your old ps3 drive in there and try to backup the data on your computer to transfer it your new one, its worth a try

Nope. The hard drive is encrypted, even if you plugged it into a PC it wouldn't be able to read the old drive. Each hard drive is married to each PS3, because each PS3 has it's own encryption key that it uses to encrypt the entire drive. That's why your old drive wouldn't work in your new PS3.

So...yeah, I know it's a bummer, but you'll never see your old data again.

if you completed like say 100% of a game and really dont want to redo it but want features that you unlocked you could always download a game save off the internet (dont call me a cheater for saying this is an option that could help out with the problem)

Nope, Sony made the great decision for auto encryption. It's showing how much of a pain it is recently, with more and more PS3's breaking, including mine.

This is what I have told a few Sony reps on the phone the last few weeks and they say that Sony doesn't really give a rat's ass about our game data.

The only other way to get your data is just to get your 60gb ps3 fixed by Sony because of the encryption system.
