First off I think the PS Vita is a great handheld gaming device and for $250 a real deal at that. I also like the idea of playing a game on the PS3 and then continuing the game on the portable PS Vita and vis versa. I do wonder how much this will end up costing down the road. $60 + tax on a PS3 game and I assume at least $40 + tax for the PS Vita version, that's over $100 to play a single game cross platform. Too, with Nvidia's Quad-Core Tegra 3 (which apparently has comparable graphics rendering ability of current gen consoles) equiped tablets and phones (which normally have HDMI out to a TV by the way) on the not so distant horizon one has to wonder if $40+ PS Vita games will be able to hold their own against Andriod games that range from $1 to $20. Current gen top of the line Android and iPhone games look and play pretty good (take a look at ShadowGun for Tegra 2 tablets and phones) and though I'm sure the PS Vita games will be superior I find that the potential price point of PS Vita games will take away from my PS3 game budget. Just wondering how this will all price out.
Side note. If the PS Vita had some integration with PS3 games in the form of a seperate inventory screen or other ingame use for a seperate screen (remote hacking in Deus Ex: Human Revolution) without costing more I think that would make owning a PS Vita that much more attractive.

Don't hold me to this but I believe I read somewhere, Gamespot or IGN or something, that, with Ruin for example, they're looking at a way to package the PS3 version of Ruin with the Vita version for free, via a digital download or something. It doesn't sound like cross-play will be available with all games initially, Ruin is the only one it is confirmed for at this time.
EDIT: Look at it this way. Ruin is the only game cross-play is confirmed for at this time. But there is no PS3 version of this game listed on Amazon or Gamestop or anything. Only the Vita version. So think about that. Anyway $40 is the most likely price point for Vita games. But digital download games may be less. But I refuse to compare it to stupid smart phones. For one thing, Vita has something that those smart phones don't have, except for Xperia Play. Actual buttons. As well as a rear touch pad. NO ONE else has that.

.....
Also WipeOut, i am sure there were others but I can't think of them right now.

I don't think Wipeout will work exactly like Ruin, I don't know if you can put down Wipeout on your PS3 and pick up where you left off on your Vita like w/ Ruin. You can play MP online w/ PS3 users while on your Vita for Wipeout, Hustle Kings, ModNation Racers, and you'll be able to share levels or created games (not sure the exact name) w/ PS3 users for LBP.

I thought you were talking about crossplay in this post not save transfers, so no WipeOut will not allow you to do that as WipeOut for the PSV will have more than the tracks that the PS3 version has, you can only crossplay on those shared tracks, but the career path would be different so a save would not transfer.

Who said the Vita is competing against smartphones?

Well for games and what device they are played on is down to how each person accepts what is offered and the conditions of their lifestyle. Some ppl can go all out and get the vita because they want the good hardware that plays the cool games that you cant find other then on a gaming handheld like the psvita.
But others on the other hand find the cheap and easy games for smart phones and tablets good enough for their gaming needs and playable timeframe.
Its just a balance on how much time, money and acceptability on what is offered and what fits the bill.

vita is NOT competing against smartphones, they are two completely different devices, smartphones are PHONES, vita is a PORTABLE VIDEO GAME SYSTEM

Jack Tretton's recent comment may reveal otherwise. . .
He said his hope is for the Vita to become, "As essential as a smartphone or ipod, and that consumers would bring it with them everywhere they go."
It's part of the reason for the name, Vita, or Life in latin.
It does lack necessary parts to be a phone, i.e. the phone part. And texting. But it appears they want it to be as essential to your daily life as a smartphone.
The link is around here or on the blog somewhere. I don't feel like scrounging it up.

There's no competition. $1 - $20 for shallow touchscreen games vs. $40 for actual deep video games that are fun for more than 2 minutes at a time. (Unless of course, we get loads of shovelware touch games on the Vita instead of developing great games. I think the touch screen on the Vita is okay, but I don't think it should be used in games.)
