Constant power outages.

9 replies 142 views Edited Jan 12, 2013

We've just been hit with a huge snowstorm and though the storm is over, the local power company is working to get power back on the the those affected.  I have power but still lose it randompy for a few minutes.

Should I unplug the PS3 until the power issues are resolved?  Is there a chance that the constant on/off of the power to my house could cause issues with the PS3?

The repeated surges of the power can be bad for your power supply. Unplug it.

While you're at it, unplug the TVs, computers and other delicate electronics as well.

Getting a surge protector would probably be a good idea too.

almost everything electronic now should be protected with surge protection...i have just recently upgraded my breaker panel with surge protection breakers as well for even more security against high/low surges..."just a note that low power surges are more dangerous than high power surges within a specific range"..

Its always a good idea to unplug electronics you do not want to have the risk of damaging during heavy outage periods. Surge protectors do not protect against every "level" of surge, if you happen to be hit with a jolt big enough and have an inadequately sufficient surge protector that's all it takes to kill something in your system like the harddrive when you decide to turn the machine back on.

Surge protectors do next to nothing.....

they simply prevent abrupt power loss in the event of a brown-out.... and most electrical surges can EASILY overpower most surge protectors.

What you guys really need are Uninterruptible Power Supplies. Like this one.

https://www.google.com/shopping/product/7471191398953084719?q=uninterruptible%20power%20supply&hl=en...

In the even of ANY sudden power loss, you still have plenty of time to save your work and safely turn off the power as it immediately switches to the internal battery which can supply as little as 4 minutes of extra power or up to 30minutes or more. They get bigger the longer they last and get insanely pricey.

they truly are life savers.

Surge protectors are merely fancy outlet extension IMO.

UPSs don't offer any protection against surges either, you know.

Not exactly true, it completely depends on what you buy.

The best brands all come with a limited warranty that covers "up too" a specific dollar amount of damages (usually 10 grand) if they fail in the event of a surge or power outage and cause damage to your devices.

That said, they still do not cover over the amounts they are rated for and they are next to impossible to prove when trying to reclaim the monetary amount promised for there failures.

the only fail safe from any of this is to unplug anything you do not need plugged in.

Actually they do. As long as you don't cheap out for a generic UPS that only prevents sudden outages.
