Connecting to internet on ps3 20g using laptop wireless

6 replies 466 views Edited Nov 29, 2006
Does anybody know if its possible to use your laptops WiFi connection and the laptops internal ethernet card to connect the PS3 20g using the ethernet cable?  Im connected to the internet through a wifi connection on the laptop and want to use that connection to hook up the ps3 to the laptop through a ethernet cable and connect that way.  Ive tried setting the network card to "share internet connection" and tried it but im not connected.  If anybody knows if this is possible or not please let me know.  oh and anybody know when ps3 or any 3rd party is going to make a wifi adapter for the ps3 20g?

You should be able to the same way you could with the PlayStation 2. Here is a link that shows you how to use your laptop as wireless HUB to setup for the PlayStation 2 online. The directions should be the same for the PLAYSTATION®3 and if it doesn't work you can always reset your connections and nothing will be lost. You must have Server 2003 or Windows XP, a crossover cable, and a wireless router to pull this off.

In answer to your second question, devices like this have been out since the PlayStation 2 came about. You can pick up either a wireless gaming adapter or wireless bridge, which depending on the wireless signal type, can run you anywhere from $20 to $120+.

A short Ethernet cable (3ft or so) will be plugged into the LAN port located on the back of the
PLAYSTATION®3. From there it will pick up the wireless signal from the wireless router and allow you to connect wirelessly. Wireless gaming adapters and wireless bridges are exactly the same, but they will up the price of a wireless gaming adapter to try and get more money from those who know that there is no difference. Read some reviews on Amazon or Newegg to see what will suit you best. :]

So far, no wireless USB adapters have been able to work, at least from what's been posted on these forums by registered users. I doubt that wireless USB adapters will ever become compatible either, simply because Sony did the same thing with the PlayStation 2, unless Sony themselves makes a wireless USB adapter that will work with the PLAYSTATION®3.
