Cleaning PS3 interior?

10 replies 861 views Edited Apr 16, 2013

Hey I have a PS3 (3001B), and I soon I plan on taking it apart (or at least opening the casing) to air-spary any dust that may have accumulated inside, as well as cleaning the fan(s). I have extensive experience taking my PS2 apart back in the day to clean the CD lens. Im not worried about the warranty (as its not under any). Can anybody enlighten me with any surprises I may find once I unscrew the bottom casing from the top?

Just be careful of static electricity, knowing which screw goes where and careful handling of those thin flat-panel wires and you'll be OK.

It can also help to research your mode to see how other people disassembled it.

So I managed to take out 99.9% of the screws on the bottom of my PS3 model. The final screw (located on the bottom side, underneath the EJECT button) requires a special torx bit as the screw has a pin in the middle stoppin a regular screwdriver from taking it out. I checked on Ebay for the screwdriver, and most of them say they are for a PS3 slim. The model number of my PS3 is CECH-3001B, it's the one with the convex top, and PS3 engraved on top. Will the screwdriver for the lock screw for the SLIM model work on mine? I'd just rather be assured before I pay 10 bucks on Ebay for one. Check out what they look like here http://www.ebay.com/itm/Torx-T8-Tamper-proof-Security-screw-driver-PS3-SLIM-/260873470604?pt=US_Vide...

A small enough precision flat-head screwdriver will fit those screws.

Think I'm gonna go with the one on Ebay. I just need to know which one, the T8 or T10.

you can find any tools you need at your local big box store... even walmart.

A precision screwdriver set will cost you about $10.

I bought a small torx kit at Lowes for $6.

If you disassemble it completely be watchful of the ribbon cables that go from the power and eject button and from the disc drive to the mother board.

They can be a pain to get in the right place. You also need to watch the attenna for the wireless and bluetooth that run from the back to the front. A canned of compressed air or a small keyboard vac work. I use a compressor and a small shop vac.
