I can
But, yeah, hopefully soon there's a patch for backwards compatibility! That was what I was hoping to hear at E3.
For a company that spent so much time and energy exhorting the virtues of a free online service, to charge for marginally useful access and other nebulous online things, this is just another slap in the face of PS3 owners who were previously told that rumble is last gen, backwards compatibility is great and the versatility of their system in allowing other operating systems to be used on their hardware was a great feature.

i can't wait to play mgs4. but it sucks that you can't play 2 or 3 on the new ones. But should i get a ps3 slim. I offered up my xbox slim on craigslist and i have 2 offers for ps3 slims. idk i f i should do it. Now fanboys don't just say, get a ps3, xbox sucks because it doesn't. live is better, you can have party chat and it has much better connection than psn, and the graphics are better. Now that one's a controversy but it's true microsoft uses The Xenos GPU which is superior the RSX on the PS3 since it can hold higher resolutino and can be used on the computer too. But i like ps3 format better. and ps3 has mgs4. now try to understand think about parting with you ps3 for an xbox 360 before you say anything

Yes, you can play ps2 games on a ps3 but the ps3 must be a 60GB console.

There are 4 generations of PS3's.
The first two were fat and had all the SD card, etc. slots and are fully backwards compatable.
The 3ed generation was fat and does not have the slots or backwards compatability.
The 4th generation is the slim. No slots or backwards compatability.
If you are not sure which version you have, look at the model number and look up the specs online.
so basically they're getting smaller and worse ![]()

Actually LslesH
The Xbox 360 GPU is much less powerfull than the PS3, most games on Xbox 360 dont run at 720p, Halo Reach only runs at 576p, and when put though a Progressive Scan mode it gets up to 720p. They have to do this because of frame rate issues in busy scenes. The PS3 can run games at 1080p+ without enchancements. Games are a bit blockier on PS3 because the Cell Processor is proving much more difficult to work with than previously anticipated, which is why Valve didn't release Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 on PS3.
Kinda like the Sega Saturn but with better games.

So just to get this down unless you have a launch ps3 20gb, 40gb, 80gb you cant at ALL play ps2 games. I have a 3rd gen PS3 (back from when the ps3 80gb was $400 about two years ago). No issue if not I still have my old ps2 anyway i just thought it would be great to be able to play on my ps3. Sorry, just want to be absolutely sure that I cant download or install something to enable this.

Only on the 20GB and 1st 80GB (with 4 USB ports) as well as the 60GB PS3. They're the only 3 models that's fully backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2 titles.
The rest of the models including the slim models is not backwards compatible with PS2 titles but still retain full emulation of PS1 titles. There's no way to install a software or physically install a chip that will enable you to have a full backwards compatible PS3.
