this is my model number...it's a 40GB

never had a major problem besides after an update it i got a black screen(scared the crap outta me), but a video reset fixed that

also a fan issue...it seems to spin up after 10 minutes and remain at that speed......i'm well out of warrenty  BUT STILL GOING STRONG!!!!!!!

EDIT: I also got a HDD failure once....but it worked after restart and rebuilt it's self.

My brother has a 40gb...the laser failed, sent it in and got it back.  The whole process took about a week and a half

I had this model, Spiderman Bundle, purchased Nov 07.  I had a laser failure and fan issue. Sent it to Sony $150, received working laser but still loud fan, sent it back under 90 day, received new one with fan problem, sent it back under 90 day and received what seems to be a working 40GB.

BTW: Its I can see what you have going on here, but all you are going to get is a list of 40GB failures.  Without knowing how many failures the other models had, the number is kind of pointless, but this is a good start.  Good Luck.

"Apparently" how?   Cite your source.  Rumors about particulat models failing are just speculation and anecdotal.   There are no real statistics on failure rates for particular models.

Apparently, this thread is pointless.
