Best power supply models for the original fat PS3 model numbers?

10 replies 6182 views Edited Aug 14, 2010

Been trying to find some 231's, but it seems the only "sure things" as it were, are sold on eBay out of China. The auctions clearly state they're official Sony units, but I've been warned againt cheap chinese knockoffs, so I'm a bit worried about those units in particular.

Conversely, I've found an APS-226 model from a seller that says it's brand new. Now I have no idea how he got a brand new PSU when they're only made and shipped in PS3 units, but in any case, he's got a high rating and he's shipping from here in the states, so it's a much more secure feeling. Do the newer models run better or cooler? Or would I be just as well with a 226 model in good condition and some new thermal paste and a new fan?

You do realize that all the PS3 power supplies are made in China? Usually 'knockoffs" are complete products, not product components. So I doubt that any of the APS-231 PSU on eBay are knockoffs, it doesn't make any sense.

I understand your concern about buying from overseas, especially if it arrives defective. I can only suggest that you wait. Eventually someone in the US will sell an APS-231.

Here is one: http://cgi.ebay.com/PS3-POWER-SUPPLY-LOT-4-WORKING-VARIOUS-MODELS-PARTS-/270621095141?pt=Video_Games

The ZSSR5391A & APS-226 are going to produce about the same amount of heat. If your current power supply is working you should wait for a APS-231.

First off you have to realize that ALL PS3s have universal power supplies, they can be used anywhere in the world. A step up/down converter is not needed or necessary. You can replace your current power supply with an APS-231 without a problem.

The lable on the console is only going to list the voltage for the intended region, BUT if you were to open up the PS3 and look at the power supply, it will list the range of voltages it supports (100V-240V).

The APS-231 supplies ~100W less power than your current power supply, which means it will generate less heat. It still supplies more power than the PS3 needs to run...

If you are asking me why your PS3 doesn't work with your step up/down adapter, I have no idea. But like I said, you need it to use your PS3, the only thing that you may need to change is the power cord, since the plugs can vary for different country...

I'm not sure that I quite understand you.

If you are saying that your PS3 doesn't work unless you plug it into the up/down converter (but only for an hour), then I would think your power supply is faulty and needs to be replaced...
