Bad PS3 Laser?????

25 replies 1447 views Edited Mar 5, 2009

I bought my PS3 in July ’07 (so it is out of warranty).  It worked fine until yesterday.  I had ordered KZ2 and received it yesterday.  I pop the game in and clicked ok for the KZ update.  Once that was done I started a new game.  During the intro movie with the guy talking, the game freezes.  I waited for a minute and nothing so I ejected the disc.  The PS3 restarted but it no longer showed the disc in the xmb.  So I restarted and tried the game again.  It looked like it was going to start loading but went to a black screen with an error message and number.  So I tried a bluray movie.  It looked like it was going to load but then went to a black error message screen again.  I tried a ps2 game and it worked.  I deleted the killzone data/save and tried again but nothing.  So (since ps3 is out of warranty) I opened it up and cleaned the laser lense with a cotton swab and 50/50 water/isopropyl alcohol.  Put it back together and started up KZ.  It asked to ok for KZ update so I click X, then it froze on that screen.  I tried audio cds, dvds movies/games and they all work.  Just no bluray discs work.  So I’m guessing my laser is kaput.  Digging around forums it seems I need to get a new KES-400 laser unit.  Has anyone tried doing that and does it work?  Anybody know a reputable vendor/site/ebayer who sells NEW laser units?

It is easier but I don't want to spend $150.  Besides I have no problem taking electronics apart.

Sorry to hear about your laser.

If you fix it yourself, please post what you do and if it works. I'd love to know.

Having the same problem myself, as are many others.

Thanks,

So it seems (from reading other posts) the laser itself is fairly easy to replace.  I just can't seem to figure out a place to buy a laser from.  It's seems almost like you have less than a 50/50 chance of getting a decent  laser.  You can fix it and it will work but for how long - no one knows.  I'm considering sending it to sony but I am not willing to risk losing my bc if they don't give me mine back. Don't know...I guess I'll just take it in the ass and buy a new one.  F@#$

You don't have to worry about losing BC.  If they have to send you a refurb, it will be the exact same model as yours.
