Its always better to wait for the slim versions of all PS system because the launch models are always plagued by problems.
Besides if you wait you get a cheaper more reliable system and a bigger catalogue of games to go with it.
For example my 2007 60GB PS3 died on me in 2010, I now have a slim 320GB PS3 and love it.
I'm going to buy it directly, because hey, new amazing games such as: bf4, killzone shadowfall, planetside 2 (its coming to ps4 ) and other games. And since you half to get ps+, connection should be better because they will probably invest that money on connection and since I have bad connection, I will be happy. Now yes, it might have problems but I think that they ill test the ps4 like 3-4 month before its release to correct any errors they spot so far. I think it will have less bugs and issues because technology is getting better and better, its been what, 5 years since ps3 came out? And in 5 years a lot of things improve. So just get it if you feel like you are going to trust the technology
My original launch PS3 lasted me 6 fantastic gaming years before needing service. To me, I gladly own an original system! Same with PS2, PS1, PSP, and other "systems". I like collecting the original systems, so to me I will not wait. Maybe I have been quite lucky, but the other white system I had purchased at launch in Nov. 2005 is still running fantastic and was never serviced.
I would only wait on the original PS4 if I really wanted a bundle deal, such as an extra controller or a game. However, as I stated I can't wait !
