60GB Question

13 replies 25 views Edited Nov 24, 2011

So... I went to GameStop the other day and bought myself my first PS3. Been wanting to get one for years now and never had the money to get one. I bought the 60GB because of the whole BC feature. However, the only time I'll probably ever use it is to play DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 or GTA San Andreas; but the PS3 itself has decent/good DBZ and GTA game(s). When I got home I did a little bit of research on the 60 model and noticed 90% of threads, reviews, etc I read said this and that about YLOD. I have mine right above my VCR in horizontial position inside my entertainment center case (as I got a medium sized dog and a five year old running around the house). GameStop does offers a free 30 Day Guarantee on their refurbed products (which this was). With this being my first PS3, I'm pretty paranoid about the YLOD and 60GB relationship.

Not sure if I should make some excuse about the 60GB crapping out on me and just get the 120GB from there. Effective Friday for the holiday season the 120 Slim model will be $200 and I paid $220 for this one. Would like to get some advice on this.

Thanks.

You don't have to make up an excuse, you have a 30 day return policy on their used hardware.

So when Friday rolls around I should go up there and replace it for the 120 slim model? I live literally five minutes from the store, so I can be up there when they are opening the doors Friday morning.

Yes. I think the $199 deal on the PS3 is only for Friday...

I can get up there easily. Luckily, I got the rest of the week off from my job. Thank God for Turkey Day & Black Friday.

A very important thing: Deactivate your PS3 before you get rid of it!. When you buy content off PSN, you are limited to 2 systems. Once you hit the limit, you can't get your paid stuff anymore. Deactivating saves you this pain that you are bound to hit down the road years from now..

Here's the link to the instructions

Thanks for that tip. I'm gonna do that right after this actually. And an error on my part apparently it's the 160 system and not the 120 for the $199 Black Friday special.

We are doomed.

But no, I don't think Sony engineers ever graduated, let alone even own a PS3.

I am inclined to agree with the consensus here.  You should get the slim.

I have a 60 gig.  Had it since launch.  Am on my third actually.  And although there are options other than Sony now to take a YLOD 60 gig and have it fixed permanently, why put your self through the hassle if you don't need to.

I use the PS2 BC of the 60 gig extensively, as well as the memory stick reader, and the extra USB ports.  Downgrading to a Slim for me would be impossible.  So for me the hassle was still worth it.

However, as you freely admit that you would hardly ever use the BC feature of the 60 gig, the hassle probably isn't worth it for you.

Not only that, $220 for a minimum four year old refurbed PS3, when a new one is $249?  You got robbed my friend.  Take it back just for that fact alone.

.

No, it only looked that way. The deactivation buttons never worked, and directed you to deactivate through your system. It was just recently that Sony allowed a way to deactivate with a PC through your account settings on quoricy.com...
