5/12 Post - We're Looking for Mother's Day PlayStation Stories!

12 replies 81 views Edited May 5, 2012

Hey everyone,

Just a head's up! For the May 12th PSN Community Spotlight, I'll be keeping a special eye out for any posts that tell a great story about PlayStation gaming and any influences it's had on Mother's Day festivities, Mom's, really anything Mom and PlayStation related. As you may know, Mother's Day is Sunday May 13th, so it'd be great to see some stories with that in mind.

Remember, just because you've already submitted a post doesn't mean you can't submit another one. If you end up posting a Mother's Day related story, I recommend you link to it in this thread so I can take a look at it.

Finally, just a note that this is not a guarantee that I'll be selecting a Mom-related post for 5/12, but it's just something I'll be keeping a look out for.

Thanks and good luck!

Oh I have a story!

So, back when the PS2 was first coming out I was so anxious about getting one.  I was 16 at the time and I had saved all of my money to buy one.  I knew that all my friends in High School would be pretty jealous if I was the only kid on the block to have one early.  However, I lived in a small town where the only place that had them was a K-Mart.  Well, I knew exactly what day the PS2's were coming out so I had to come up with a plan to tell my mom that I was going to go to the store early to buy one....or, tell her somethign else that would convince her that I needed to leave the house early.  I was helping to setup an event at our high school on the same day that the PS2's were released so I used that excuse.  I went rushing downstairs where my mom was half awake at 5:00am and told her that I was leaving early to go help setup at the high school.  She bought it!  So, I was off to stand in line at K-Mart.

Behold!  I was the 6th person in line!  I'll be honest here, this was the first time in my life that I ever stood in line for anything except school lunches!  So here I was, freezing my hands off standing in line for a PS2, but I was still excited!  Once the doors opened, we all rushed in and to my suprise, there were only 6 PS2's available for purchase!  I lucked out!  When I got to the register to pay, I saw my cousin Koren helping to load other packages.  She came by and said hi as I handed over the cash to buy the new toy.  We talked for a bit and I ran out the door to go to the high school like a good boy!  Bad thing was, I had only saved enough money for the PS2 only.....no games .

Well, I believe that was a Friday.  On Sundays, our family usually gets together at my grandparents place for lunch.  We all went over and ate and talked and ate and talked.  I could hardly stand being there knowing that a PS2 was sitting at home for me.  I got done eat and left the kitchen to go watch TV in the living room.  As I talked to my other cousin Jill, I heard my other cousin Koren tell my mom, "Guess who I saw at Kmart at 5:00 in the morning?"  ....I was toast!

My mom then called me into the kitchen where she confronted me about me buying a PS2 behind her back.  Of course, I confessed and told her I lied.  She made me drive her right home, pick up the PS2 and return it!    Ugh, what a horrible backfire that was.

About a year later I graduated high school and moved out to go to college.  Can you guess what the was first thing that I bought on my own?  My mom was nice enough to let me use the money I first spent on the PS2 to now spend on books for college.  Although, I didn't study so much now that I could play video games.

Well, that's my story.  I hope you enjoyed it.

I'm glad that you're having this feature, because I have a story for you!

Last weekend, My mother had her first videogame experience. My mother, aged 56, never really understood gaming. She saw gaming just as her right wing television networking wanted her to. To her, and my father for that matter, games were only about brutally killing and stealing cars. With her slamming gaming for the majority of my life, I decided to finally counter back, and I began my research.

I tried to think of what game could show her that my passion wasn't all about violence and over testoroned space marines. I wanted to let her play Portal 2, but the concepts were probably too complex for a first time gamer. After many thoughts and failed ideas, I finally realized the perfect game. ThatGameCompany's Journey.

Starting at 9:00AM on a beautiful Sunday morning, I pulled my mother aside and handed her a controller. I told her that I would not be helping her, and that she was free to do whatever she wanted in the game. It went excellently. Even for a first time player, Journey's narrative pulled her along, and she knew exactly what her goal was from the get-go. Some of the execution was off though (the process of jumping was hard for her).

After the game finished and the credits rolled, she saw the list of players she met along the way. She didn't realize that the other characters in the world of Journey were real people online, and she was stunned. She couldn't believe that another player would help her through a world, come back for her when she fell, and hold her hand through some of the toughest areas. I snapped a picture of their names on my cameraphone, so that I could send them a thank you message later.

Hours later, after my Mom had left, I typed This message (http://i.imgur.com/5qZ8v.jpg) to them on my Vita, which I then posted to the website Reddit. At the end of the day, it had 250,000 views, 3000 upvotes, and even a retweet from ThatGameCompany themselves.

My Mom's first game experience not only was awesome for her, but also inspired many to buy Journey and play it for themselves. What an awesome Sunday.

This goes back to 1997. I would go to my friend's house just about everyday to play his PSX. Our favorite game to play was the Twisted Metal demo over anything else. It was because of that demo that I begged my mom for a PSX. She said no cuz my grades were a bit low. I immediately worked on getting them up. Less than a year later my mom picks me up from school as usual. When we got home she told me there were groceries in the trunk of the car. As soon as I opened it up, I see a PSX with Twisted Metal and Tomb Raider. She had talked to my friend the week before to make sure to get the games I would like. I was so happy! It ended up being great because later that year I had back surgery and was bed ridden for three months and it came in handy. I still thank my mom for introducing me to the greatest company ever!

Remidner for those who have responded! You need to make a seperate thread with the post as well. Then best practice is to link me to that post in this thread so I can go check it out. I can't pick a post if it doesn't have a dedicated thread in this Space.

Thanks!

Fun story! Does this have its own thread? Needs to have a thread to be considered. Once it does, please link me to it.
